You don’t need the run game to be working to have play action work.
Yes you do. If the linebackers don't jump up into the gap immediately, play action doesn't work. The whole notion of play action is the get the linebackers to bite. With this line they don't have to bite.

If its the same nonsense, then John Schneider needs to own up to it.
I understand that they were picking from the bottom of the barrel because of how late we signed Macdonald. But its beyond obvious we arent going anywhere with Grubb.

Linebackers will bite on play action even if you’re a middling run team. This isn’t high school or even college, NFL teams have a modicum of respect for the run.

Play action is way more effective when the run has been effective, but it’s not ineffective.

When the defense can get into the backfield without having the linebackers react, play action adds nothing. They're not going to bite and they are going to drop back into their shallow zones.

We literally scored our TD on play action.

I think the overarching issue with Grubb is that he doesnt know how to setup plays in the NFL, whether from pass to run, within the run game or within the pass game.

There is very little baiting a defense by running a few designs and them hitting the lm with something that keeps them off balance.

You see it a ton when we try to hit big plays like the one we tried to get to DK on 3rd and 4 on our last drive of the half.

One, there was no situational awareness. We shoukd have hit a swing pass or something to get the yardage and move on.

Two, Grubb forces the deep shot rather than building logically toward it. Case in point, that last play and the 3rd and 4 when we were inside the 35 the possession before. Situational blindness, and an inability to build any coherent strategy to gain an advantage over the defense.

You can see defenders lining up ahmnd alomst immediately recognizing what we are doing. They arent made to guess at all. Arent baited at all.
