I must be behind the times... I thought the qb is down when he starts his slide. Or is that just college?

When he started the slide the ball was extended pass the line to gain

Doesn't the slide start as soon as the QB starts to go to the ground? Or is it when the knees touch? I always thought it was when the QB starts to go down, which is how "starts" to slide seems to interpret.

What I thought as well. That bit about where the ball is when the knee touches is the first I'd ever heard of that.

Either there's been a rule change, or that rule has been explained wrong dozens of times over the past 7 years or so. Or maybe tonight's crew was wrong.

Yeah it's suppose to be when you start. Not when knees touch. Rule change couple years ago. You can't even dive for yards

(d) when a runner declares himself down by:
(1) falling to the ground or kneeling, and clearly making no immediate effort to advance; or
(2) sliding. When a runner slides feet or head first or simulates sliding, the ball is dead the instant he touches the ground
with anything other than his hands or his feet, or begins to simulate touching the ground;

Great challenge, you were calling a TO anyways
Completely agree. They were going to call a time out anyway and there was a chance of a missed spot. All challenges would be coming from the officials 17 seconds later anyway....non-issue imho.

I thought saving that time out on 3rd and 1 might have been the better move since it was before the 2 minute.
