If players stopped using their helmets to spear other players in the head, I'd agree with you. But in this case, the fines are well deserved. I felt no sympathy for Meriweather's injury because after 2 helmet to helmet hits, he deserved to be the one with the injury.
Like I said, I think the fines were probably justified by letter of rule. And I deff agree with you about hitting with your head. I have zero data to quote but I guess that 50/50 is the chance of hurting ones self as it is hurting the opposing player when you use your head as the weapon. I personally wouldn't do it. Risk not worth reward. I just don't care for the league changing the rules every time we turn around. It's the place I see "evolution" taking the game I don't like.
I agree with you that some of the rule changes are bizarre and useless (the spinning the ball taunting penaltyn and really, the addition of any celebration penalty.) When it comes to player safety and concussions, though, I tend to think that those penalties weren't enforced well enough previously rather than the opposite.
Also, the NFL is a business, and they'll continue to change the rules to make their businesses more profitable. A rule change that is not well received and may cause a drop in revenue will be deleted from the books. I guess I'm OK with that.
