It's good that he's getting the reps, because he's got the athleticism but lacks the experience at the position. Right now, our best bet is for Carpenter to get to 100% and stay healthy for a season, but getting Sweezy the reps now could pay dividends when/if Carpenter gets hurt.

Do you mean McQuistan here? I'm not sure what Sweezy and Carpenter have to do with each other.

Because when Carpenter comes back, he takes the Left Guard spot, and I'd be rather surprised if McQuistan didn't get the nod at Right guard

Sweezy has the potential to be very good. McQuistan is a solid back up, decent start at best. I would be surprised if McQusitan took over for Sweezy.

He's a target, thats for sure. Bad dress rehearsal, limited experience. He will be on every teams radar until he shows better. Hope Tom Cable is right.

Potential doesn't do it, you have to be better now if you want to start. Last season they could have started McQuistan/Sweezy or Sweezy/Moffit, but they didn't, they started McQuistan and let Sweezy and Moffit Rotate. That tells me that through the end of last season, McQuistan was the best healthy guard on the team. With Carpenter's return, we shall see if that has changed this offseason or not. It's obvious they feel Sweezy beat Moffit, thus Moffit's trade, but it is yet to be shown whether he's done enough to win a starting job over either McQuistan or Carpenter. All we know for sure as of now is that he beat out Moffit

Is it me, or was a butt-load of penalties called in that game, period?

Look, there was a flag on every third play (it seemed) and I saw stuff that could have been called that wasn't. Like the Sherman pass defense no-call. THAT was PI if there ever was PI, but it wasn't called. I think that game can be called an anomoly in terms of looking at any one player for penalties.

I will say one thing; I really liked the way Sweezy knocked that guy off that pile. I'll take that 15 yards.

Honestly, I thought Sweezy was terrible in real time, but I did not realize that it was just crappy reffing until Kearly looked again. I trust his eye. I haven't played organized tackle football since high school, so I don't probably have the best calibration for what refs normally call and what they don't normally call anymore.

I don't know about everyone else, but I really liked seeing PC lay into him. There's zero excuse for that late hit. Shoot, they traded a popular guy, 3rd round pick etc. because they want him to be the starter etc. I think PC is a lot tougher than he seems, just my own opinion, but the dude lays down the law when the time comes. Sweezy had it coming to him.

He was bad, I have watched the game 3 times now and he was just awful.

I hope to never have enough spare time to watch a pre-season game three times.

I don't want to replace Sweezy with McQuistan unless someone can convince me that McQuistan is actually better. I'm starting to hear echoes of "Let's make a change just to find out" syndrome.

I think McQuistan is going to be a cap casualty.

I was thinking that precamp, then did an aboutface.

Why are you saying that now?

I think it might be true because Alvin Bailey might be able to play LG at the same level or better, and for cheaper too.

EDIT: If Carpenter can go, you have Okung - Carp - Unger - Sweezy - Giacomini with Bailey, Jeanpierre, and Johnson able to step in at G capably in case of injury. We have lots of capable guards and thus no reason to pay McQ what he is making to play LG.
