Great point by Bill Simmons in his picks column today:

CHARGERS (+2.5) over Colts
Yes, I'm riding the "Everyone who plays the super-physical Seahawks is bruised and battered the following week" theory and picking against the Colts, a team that I've actually come to respect as a legitimate Super Bowl contender, if only because of Andrew Luck (as covered earlier).

So I went back and took a look at how teams did the week after they played the Seahawks. Here are the results.

Week 2 - PANTHERS 23 Bills 24
Week 3 - Colts 27 49ERS 7
Week 4 - Colts 37 JAGUARS 3
Week 5 - TEXANS 3 49ers 34

So other than the Panthers [who still lost], the other 3 teams we played got destroyed the next week, possibly because the Hawks physically beat the crap out of them.

I think this was opined a week or so ago. I think our defense is more speed than brawn and our offense is not pounding the rock as much as they could, so I am not ready to jump on this idea yet. But it does either show they are or their opponents aren't on a roll yet.

There could be an emotional letdown factor at play here as well. The Seahawks have been one of the most hyped teams this year, so it's easy to get really up for that game. That can cause a letdown the next week. I see some special circumstances in a couple of those games, too. 49ers were coming off that whole Aldon Smith debacle, and Texans had their hearts ripped out by their own QB. Not convinced that it's a physical issue at all.

Seattle is built on SPARQ scores and SPARQ scores equal power and power equals pain. Speed is a major component of big hitting.

SF was decimated. Cushing got a concussion and Watt was bleeding profusely. Chancellor's hit on Davis last year was the signature hit of the NFL season. Everyone knows Seattle is physical because Seattle is physical. It shows up in the injury reports. Including our own.

Flaming Thumbtacks are a physical defense. This game will not be good for us on a physical level, especially with a Thursday game 4 days later. Hopefully WE won't be on that list.

+1

Titans bring it defensively. It's going to be war out there.

I'm telling ya, each defense Sunday deserves to have "Thug Life" tattooed on their stomachs, like Jseahawks.

He also has "Thug Wife" tattooed on his low back.

Good observation. I already noticed how the Niners got smeared the week after we played them, as though they were totally punked out like some prisonyard bitch--ESPECIALLY KAPARNICK.

Listening to Colin Cowherd where he gets the "Wise Guys" take on this weekends games and according to them, "Teams favored a week after playing the Seahawks are 3-17 against the spread."

I have no idea what that means but i would guess it means they struggle with the point differential?

In the 49ers game, we simply beat the snot out of them with what was supposedly THEIR strength. I think it was Michael Irvin talking on NFL Network or ESPN after the game, where he said Seattle broke the 49ers soul...we beat them not with scheme or with fancy trickery, but we attacked their strengths and crushed em. I definitely think there was hangover symptoms for them after our game when they played against the Colts—and it showed, big time.

Houston, same thing. We snatched that victory right out from underneath them and we did it in such a bruising, physical way that they probably also had hangover symptoms and got throttled by the 49ers because of it.

The Jags and the Panthers.....that's a tough call because they just aren't that consistent of teams, but the results don't lie. 0-4 for teams after playing the Hawks...

the trend continues...

even on 8 days rest the Colts lost to the Chargers (and looked awful in the process)

teams are now 0-5 in 2013 the week after playing the Hawks

This pattern has been occurring long enough that I can no longer believe it to just be a coincidence. For 5 weeks straight now, each team that plays against the Seahawks has lost it's next game by an average of 19 points! This is a true testament to the physical and mental beating the Seahawks deliver each week. Even though we didn't beat the Colts, they still went down tonight looking tired and sluggish.

Week 5: Seahawks vs Colts - Colts lose to the Chargers Week 6 by 10 points.
Week 4: Seahawks vs Texans - Texans lose to the 49ers Week 5 by 31 points.
Week 3: Seahawks vs Jaguars - Jaguars lose to the Colts Week 4 by 34 points.
Week 2: Seahawks vs 49ers - 49ers lose to the Colts Week 3 by 20 points.
Week 1: Seahawks vs Panthers - Panthers lose to the Bills Week 2 by 1 point.

It will be interesting to see if the pattern can hold against the Cards who will get an extra long break after Thursday.

So essentially, Seahawks beat two teams for the price of one every week they get a W, and beat one team for the price of a loss. Hey, this is great for playoff/HFA implications: even if 49ers win when we play them at the Candle, they'll chalk up another on the L column the following week, right?

Here's to avenging last year's Week 1 away game loss in Phoenix!

I like your logic... let's hope it holds true!

Would be a wicked gimmick for a Halloween commercial with the Legion of Boom as the four Horsemen. With Browner and Thurmond sharing a demonic steed. LOL.

I would not be bummed out if this trend goes cold and the Titans gut out a win.

That said, it'll be interesting to keep an eye on.

Looks like someone pulled Terry Blount's coat-tail on this issue

One interesting stat seems to show that playing the Seahawks takes a toll on the opponent. All five lost the following week, and four of the five lost by double digits the week after playing the Seahawks.

Two of those teams are 4-2 -- San Francisco and Indianapolis. The Colts are only team to defeat Seattle, but they lost 19-9 Monday night at San Diego.

Failing to make the spread means a team is failing to attain the points differential the Vegas oddsmakers are setting as the betting point. E.g.: NO by 10 over SL. It means we are punking them prison-yard style. ESPECIALLY KAPAEARNICK.
