From Brian Bosworth's Facebook:

The use of 'Monster DB #44' was to show the hypocrisy of the NFL...ie... Stupid rule enforcement over #s system. Denver Broncos LBs Karl Mecklenburg #77, Simon Fletcher #73, NY Giant LB Brad Van Pelt #10, more recent Colts TE Dallas Clark #44.

Look up the NFL's numbering system and it shows clearly THEIR RULE. "Control" is subjective to what is in the best interest of the controller. I win for one game the right to wear #44 against KC... Hawks won!! I lost $25k in fines due to non adherence to the NFL's Uniform # Code and would be fined for every game I refused to adhere to the "rule".

We showed you can win and still lose when you stand up for what you believe in... Silly lesson... But athletes feel a special relationship with some of the strangest things...top of the list is #s.

#44 has a special meaning to me. Coach Switzer tried to take #44 away from me in college. WE TALKED! HE GOT IT!! I wore it, #44, it works... a slice of the mind of BOZ!!

Correct. He wanted to wear 44 and the team tried to list him as a DB. Also I believe at the owners meeting Ken Over Behring tried to put it up for a vote to allow any number to be worn by any player and he was basically laughed at. Boz looked good in 55 but something didn't look right if you watched him a lot as I did in college. Would have looked better wearing 44.

I was just helping out with the pic Seabowl.

I didn't know the story but thought it had something to do with the #44/#55 debate.

Behring was not the owner who drafted Boz.. nordstrom's were

I never said Behring drafted him. Only said that he tried to have the owners change the rules on what numbers players can wear and he did this solely for Boz.

Man, the Boz should have his own dedicated thread. Better yet, the NFL Network should stop wasting it's time with guys still playing ( Revis) and do a NFL Life with Brian Bosworth. I read the SI article about him before he came out and hated him. He was not nearly as bad in the NFL as the media portrays him. His shoulders were shot when the Hawks drafted him but he gave it his best effort, probably would have lasted longer if he stayed on the roids.

Behring had no affiliation with the Seahawks when Bozworth was drafted and the number controversy happened in 87. Behring was in California selling real estate..

That was the point I was making

I have a pretty good memory and recall Behring lobbying to have the rule changed at the owners meeting. Boz's rookie year was the fall of 87 and Behring bought the team in 88. Seems like it would have been at the owners meeting in 88. FYI Boz was lobbying for this for more than a few months.

I had that poster in the living room of my apartment as a 21 year old. We spent months trying to figure out who the girl was. No Internet back then.

I remember Julian Peterson wanting #44 as well. He said it was to "remind people that he did once run a 4.4 40". Paraphrasing of course.

Yeah he actually wore it before the season in training camps and minicamps.

Never understood why that play gets so much hype for Jackson. Boz comes all the way across the field for the tackle while Jackson is running north/south. Even with that advantage, Jackson is down within a couple yards of contact. If the play occurred outside the endzone I doubt it ever sees a replay.

This. I think it got so much play just because so many didn't like The Boz. Damn I wish he played longer and kicked more ass than he did.

Does anyone remember the book he wrote? I owned it and loaned it out never to be seen again.

I remember Boz first practice, I was there in Kirkland, parked and he drove up in his convertible white corvette, parked right next to me and I was sitting with this stupid look wandering what to do, should I say anything, ask for his autograph anything? I was a 20 yr old kid and what did I do? Locked my keys in my truck as I was baffled.
