I saw this and I actually love the though at bringing him in. He is a big receiver (6'3" 215 lbs) who can block and has played for only run first teams and can return the ball. He is age 30 which means a 1-2 year deal makes the most sense.

He scared me when he was with the Niners, but he has been trending downward ever since. There's a reason he keeps getting bounced around every year.

He ran 4.28 at one point. Surely that has declined a bit over time. I would be willing to look at just about anything to get some semblance of a return game back! Going from Leon Washington, to Tate, to Harvin to... Walters.....SMH!

I agree the position needs to be upgraded. They went into last year hoping Earl could return punts and Harvin could return kicks. They didn't really have a good backup plan. Walters was the safe choice.

This year I would expect they try to find more dynamic returners. I don't think Ginn is the answer.

I'm hearing it was 2 years for a little more than $5 million. I'm guessing he'll be a part time receiver and full time return man for that price.

I agree the position needs to be upgraded. They went into last year hoping Earl could return punts and Harvin could return kicks. They didn't really have a good backup plan. Walters was the safe choice.

O.T., but PLANNING on E.T. returning punts was one of the crazier things I can think of in recent NFL memory. That the Super Bowl champs would put the linchpin of their defense back there returning kicks -- particularly when he looked so bad doing so -- was always nuts to me.

Was it something E.T. was intensely lobbying for or something? I never understood the logic of it.

Edit: just checked. I guess I had assumed he was returning punts in college. Nope. Not that either. Before last year in college and the pros he had returned four punts in his entire life. Then he returned 2 of them last year before the Hawks came back to their senses. Just really strange.

Earl Thomas lobbied Pete Carroll for an opportunity to compete as a return man.

In a program that places a huge emphasis on special teams and participation on special teams thru out the roster, it wasn't a surprise to anyone that understands Seahawk football in the Pete Carroll era.

Edit: Can't say that I was all that comfortable with the experiment. Placing the cover 3 lynch pin at an additional risk was, I thought, a bit over the top.

It's a matter of Thomas' freak athleticism. If you've ever seen Thomas get an INT with some space to work with the idea of a player with his skills makes sense. But Thomas's role and importance on the team is what made it an absurd experiment.
