Pro Football Weekly's player rankings - safeties

There is exactly one blue chip player in the entire NFL on their safety list. That's right, you guessed it; it's the guy allowing me to put this post in the main forum and not the NFL Nation one, our own beloved Earl Thomas.

Hub Arkush is a contributor to a lot of things, and boy, did he nail this one well. Earl Thomas is vastly underappreciated, and like others around here have said, I'd rather lose Sherman than Thomas. (Nothing personal, Sherm; I love ya.)

On the other hand, having been through all the position lists, the only blue chip players we have, apparently, are ET, Sherm and Lynch.

What people never see and fail to realize is just how difficult his position is.

He has to play as a deep safety but be aggressive in the run game - in other words be all of the field - but never out of position as if he bites too hard in the run game he may get burned.

The ability to play at 8-10 yards depth and make plays in the backfield on NFL RBs without ever getting fooled for a long on is phenomenal. He has the best closing speed of any player in the NFL and can tackle to boot.

The problem is, no one ever sees it because of the tight angles that NFL cameras have.

They obviously don't know what they're talking about. Safeties need to be able to hit and are more valuable if they can lay the wood. So it should be:

1. Kam Chancellor
2. TJ Ward
3. Laron Landry

Also he's an awesome blitzer.

His range is amazing to me. Watching him on the all-22 as he comes from two-thirds of the way across the field to make a play on a football is just one of the true beautiful things about this game in general.

I've said it before, ET's ability to play that single high safety and cover the entire field with his great instincts and sick closing speed is what allows the rest of our defence to do what it does. He very well might be the single most valuable player on our entire team (#3 included). Glad to see somebody noticed.

This may just be an indictment on the state of the safety position, but there HAS to be somebody better. I LOVE Earl. Don't get me wrong. I have a full-fledged man-crush. He's my favorite Seahawk. But he drops so many easy picks, misses some tackles, and could be so much better! Are we sure this isn't just about how good he looks and how fast he is, versus how productive he is? If he is already the best safety in the league (which I have read in numerous spots, not just here), think about how much better he could be than everybody else if he takes that next step which he seems to be capable of.

Are the rest of the safeties so mediocre that a guy who leaves so much on the table is considered the best of them all? There has to be somebody that capitalizes more on their talent, isn't there?

He's 24 years old. Think about that. He's just getting going.
