Joe Burrow made the point early last year that there is a difference between a sack and a sack and the same for interceptions. Howell made the same point about his time in Washington.

When it is third and long and nobody is open or a deep RISKY thrown downfield are the options then a sack or an int are very different then a sack or int on first or second down. Also you play on a team that is constantly struggling to score or hold opponents then the QB has to press more and take more risks.

Put the same player in a situation where he doesn't have to carry the team or the 3rd downs are more manageable and their numbers will change.

Howell will need a few months games to continue changing his reflexes, but from what I saw he looked like a great backup with potential for more.

He's getting better, it seems. Those ragging on his stats last year (not in this thread) don't really account for the fact that Rivera refused to run the ball, and Howell had a silly number of attempts. One way to kill a young running back is to neglect to protect him with a running game.

Following anything on Facebook besides friends is boomer brain rot

I follow a few Seahawk pages there, but I forgot that .Net is the only place non boomers post at. Thanks for the reminder.

You might be confusing him with PJ. He had the flat pass that should have been a pick 6.

They started a little slow, but by the 3rd series, Howell was playing well...reading the D and seeing the field. He also showed his wheels and escapeability.

Then he put an exclaimation point on it this past Sunday.
Quite possibly...I was watching it early Sunday morning before my coffee had kicked in!

Yes, but he's still the guy making the decisions on the field. That's my point. Coaching matters. Plenty of QB's make stupid decisions even with talent around them.
He's being more cautious and not forcing stuff like he always has.

actually they are. so many fans keep saying they want him over Geno. literally insane if you ask me
Have to admit I'm starting to think about it. Especially with these rumors he's wanting to renegotiate his contract. Geno better ball out.

I don't want Howell to start. But I want Geno to start........WINNING BIG GAMES. Just sayin.
The beatings will continue until the defense improves.

OK, but Geno had several 4th Qtr GW drives last year IIRC...
The Hawks' problem wasn't Geno in the Pissburgh game that killed playoff chances and sealed Pete's exit.

I thought he was OK in preseason game 1. There were a couple of throws that should have been picked, 1 for a pick 6 on a flat pass.

The game on Saturday there was a big improvement and the touch he showed on the touchdown was beautiful. He looks like he is learning every week and with a good coaching set-up he will only get better. I am hoping that he will be the QB next year when Geno leaves for more money and I am not overly worried (at the moment) :)
Yeah, a PJ throw, pretty sure.

When I see those dropped INTs, I always think to myself, "that's why that guy is a DB and not the next Jerry Rice".
Stats record it as: Pass-Break-Up for the DB. Agent records it as: Stats for negotiating next contract.
Coach records it as: "We gotta do f---kin pass catching practice for our f---kin butterfingers DBs!!"
NFL records it as: Another coulda, shoulda, loss for team butterfingers.

Isn't there some ESPN chat board we could get expert opinions at, unburdened by NFL-knowledgeable has-beens? /sarc

He is not clutch. Until I see differently, I stick to my opinion.

You mean the SEVERAL passes from Geno in the 2nd half of the season that should have been picked? Just because the defenders have feet for hands, it doesn't change the fact that his decision making was iffy at best in several games. Not sure I've ever seen a QB get luckier than he did, on SEVERAL occasions.

Not gonna try to talk your out of your viewpoint, which seems to be, "Geno sucks".
Just saying, for last season "Geno was a little above average, and the defense sucked".

Maybe I'm giving Geno credit for sucking less than a couple season ago?
Peak Russell, Mr. 3-and-out, benefitted from that LOB defense holding the other team at bay.
Geno has had no such bailout program from the Hawks D. Maybe he will have it this year? We can hope.

Howell in six preseason quarters:
27/41 for a 65.9% CMP%, 283 yards (6.9 avg), 2 TDs, zero INTs.

Not lighting it up, but he has looked acceptable as a backup to me. The big concern from his year of starting was the interceptions, and in 6 quarters he had zero. He also played with second string (and lower) receivers and RBs. Not too shabby.
