Howell has looked pretty good so far. The TD pass yesterday was a thing of beauty. I think the best thing is, he seems to have noticably improved the two biggest weakness' from his rookie year, avoiding turnovers and getting the ball out quick. This makes me think he is listening to the coaching staff and still has more room to improve. He is only 23 and I am still hoping he is the QBoTF.
The TD pass is an example of what Howell is capable of he was mis used in Washington

I wouldn't say Howell was a rookie last year but for a 2nd year player to throw for that many yards you must have some upside.

Yeah if Howell is a tiny bit faster with his release and decision making he will be even better against starting level NFL defenses.
Howell started the last game in his rookie year so close to be a rookie last year

I was set that the Hawks have plans for Howell to be the future when in a press conference with Schnieder and McDonald a member of the media what the plans are for QB beyond 2025 who I think was Gregg Bell asking the question, Schnieder had a WTF look on his face and said we have Geno and Sam Howell for 2 more years

Minshew? MAYBE
I loved Minshew coming out of Wazzu...but my gut says Howell has bigger upside potential. His arm is legit...can make all the throws tried so far and shown excellent touch. Appears to read D's well and making quick throws. He's got some wheels too. When coupled with a good system, the potential is really good IMO.

Minshew has some Russ in him...successful working out of systems quite a bit, which we know has some downside.

We all know JS is a Green Bay front office guy. I think he's hoping we're in a situation where Sam can learn and grow behind a starter we all really like until the time is right to move him into the starter role. But remember GB moved Hass when he had value and Rogers was seen as the future. They also traded Rogers when they thought it was the right time. And they got value for Matt Flynn and Favre...probably others I can't think of immediately. JS will keep churning that position and adding value. I think Sam is a valuable asset and still growing, but as an example: What do you think the Steelers would give for Sam Howell if Fields and Wilson continue to average 6 pts/game against backup Defenses? ...or next offseason, if Howell really shows his chops and looks like a #1, what kind of trade value would Geno have? JS knows the GB system works and he has the authority to make those calls now. We should all be glad he's acting on a plan that has resulted in some of the best QB succession ever. I like Sam Howell, but I like that he's added value to the team in a way the backup QB never has before. As far as the future in the NFL, I think that only describes the next season. Anything can happen in 24 months. In that context, the Seahawks have 2 QBsOTF: 2 starting caliber QBs under contract for at least 2 years. ... and that's the best place we've been in for ... maybe ever?

I bring all this up because I think it's a big deal he's doing well, not just for the 24 season. I also think JS deserves a shout out.

Minshew was an Air Raid QB at Wazzu under Mike Leach... he was so much fun to watch in college, AND Minshew was good at limiting turnovers, the one thing in common with Russ. Minshew, as far as I can see in the NFL, agreeing with you, reads defenses and goes through progressions. He HAS TO, because his game isn't running around for 5 seconds and making a sandlot throw. Minshew came within 1 receiver dropped pass of getting the Colts into the playoffs last year. I'll be watching the Raiders as a Minshew fan this season.

Raised in Spokane and E. WA/Inland empire so was a Coug fan as a kid.

actually they are. so many fans keep saying they want him over Geno. literally insane if you ask me
Mostly I've seen people on this forum hoping Howell progresses enough to take over for Geno in another season or two.
Where on this board is anyone with actual reputation and history saying that Howell should start over Geno this year?

It's certainly a fair, if IMO delusional, argument to have. I HOPE Howell gets good enough to replace Geno at some point, after a couple Lombardis.

Brilliant post. Thank you for pointing this out. Russell, and Carroll's final-say GM deference to Russell's insecurity, made the Green Bay QB succession approach difficult in Seattle. Now we see Schneider and MM getting on the same page on this.

I thought he was OK in preseason game 1. There were a couple of throws that should have been picked, 1 for a pick 6 on a flat pass.

The game on Saturday there was a big improvement and the touch he showed on the touchdown was beautiful. He looks like he is learning every week and with a good coaching set-up he will only get better. I am hoping that he will be the QB next year when Geno leaves for more money and I am not overly worried (at the moment) :)

You might be confusing him with PJ. He had the flat pass that should have been a pick 6.

They started a little slow, but by the 3rd series, Howell was playing well...reading the D and seeing the field. He also showed his wheels and escapeability.

Then he put an exclaimation point on it this past Sunday.
