Howell has looked pretty good so far. The TD pass yesterday was a thing of beauty. I think the best thing is, he seems to have noticably improved the two biggest weakness' from his rookie year, avoiding turnovers and getting the ball out quick. This makes me think he is listening to the coaching staff and still has more room to improve. He is only 23 and I am still hoping he is the QBoTF.

His college stat line was 713/1117 (63.8%), 10283 yards, 92 TDs, 23 INTs. He's a really good QB with a big arm. He threw for almost 4000 yards as a rookie in that Washington offense last year. He gets so much flack for the sacks/interceptions last year, but he was thrown into the fire. He's looked in complete control so far. I bet his rookie stats are better than his college teammate Drake Maye's are this year.

I wouldn't say Howell was a rookie last year but for a 2nd year player to throw for that many yards you must have some upside.

Yeah if Howell is a tiny bit faster with his release and decision making he will be even better against starting level NFL defenses.

I don't know why I have it in my head that he was a rookie last year. You're absolutely right. So he was only 21 years old when he was drafted.

Correct, should have said 1st year starting not rookie.

Either way, I'm still excited!

You don’t need to hope he is the QBOTF. He is most likely the future QB. He is 23 years old and backing up a 34 year old veteran. If this doesn’t make him the Seahawks probable future starting QB, then what the hell is a QBOTF? I’ll tell you what those 5 letters mean. If you have a young QB with upside backing up a veteran then by all logic that younger backup is the future. Can we please drop this stupid as **** QBOTF moniker? We don’t have LTOTF, MLBOTF, TEOTF, KOTF(although that one might be worth looking into), RBOTF, etc. Any kid born today from athletic parents could be called QBOTF. Please make it stop. Old man rant over. Wait, one more. Get off my lawn.

i think everyone's wanting or hoping to get the next Mahomes, purdy, or whatever. Realistically barring an utter meltdown on offense and defense, we're not sniffing a number 1 overall pick for a while Imo and even then its not a given that whoever we draft regardless of where in the draft he's taken that he's the QBOTF .. could've been a college baller but then to an NFL burn out because. its all a gamble right?

KC and SF didn’t know what they had until they played in NFL games. Nobody really knows how a drafted or even undrafted QB or any other positional player will be until they play actual games and develop their own game.

I’m the first to say that preseason football is a lot less pressure and more vanilla schemes which should make for an easier time for a quarterback.

I’ll also repeat what I’ve said before, that I wasn’t a fan of the Howell trade.

With the above statements being true I am strongly leaning towards changing my opinion of him after seeing him play for us. Especially in contrast to Walker (that guy truly should find a new position). I can’t get past this being preseason so I still have some doubts about anointing him our QBOTF but I now have confidence in his ability to be a strong backup for us and am open to seeing how he continues to grow.

One thing is clear. He has been properly coached about throwing the ball away/live for another play instead of trying to make something happen which ended up with 21 INTS from him last year, regardless of circumstance. That's a very good sign because it's a bad habit that needs to be broken and he looks to be taking that part of his game seriously. I'm encouraged what I am seeing from him to be our backup.

Reminds me of a less bravado-ish Baker Mayfield.

The difference is, QB is the most important position on the field. If you don't have a QB, you can't run your offense. Geno is getting old and wants a new contract. Seattle is well over the cap next year and cutting Geno would solve most of that cap hit. They will probably need to give Howell some kind of deal, ala Jordan Love 2 years ago, or risk him having a great season and then having to pay him $50m.

Either way I'm excited and happy that if Geno were to miss time, we have a solid backup.

I wasn't impressed at all. Granted it wasn't the starters, but he hasn't shown anything that would indicate that he should start over Geno. He's late on reads constantly. Or not seeing guys who are wide open. And those swing route passes he does....he needs to get the ball out quicker.

Nobody's really talking about Howell starting over Geno anytime soon. I and a few others are happy with his progress as QB2.
