Tyler Huntley is a vested veteran. If he is on an NFL active roster for Week 1 his contract will become guaranteed for the season. No team should want to guarantee a player contract just for the emergency QB3 role. He has temporarily signed for the Ravens PS and he will be inactive Week 1.

How is that differnet from someone still on their rookie contract with a Roster bonus?

According to OTC Trey Lance has a Roster bonus of $4.2m and Zach Wilson $1.7m. Wouldn't Huntley would cost less to be on the roster than either of them.

Bottom line: the Ravens won't have Huntley active for Week 1. After that they can pay him to be on the active roster as and when they need him. There's no reason to guarantee his salary.

1st round picks receive guaranteed 4 year contracts. If you trade for them you know what you are getting. Personally I wouldn't have traded for Lance a year ago, but I can understand the Cowboys believing he still had upside. I didn't see any upside to Zach Wilson but the Broncos didn't want to go into the Draft with only 1 QB on their roster. If they missed out on their QB he was potentially their QB2.

This is what confused me I thought rookies had fully guaranteed contracts but then I see they have "roster bonuses" which logically should only be paid if they make the roster. If Trey Lance was cut would he get the roster bonus? If so why is it different to base salary.?

Teams can agree certain clauses with players...but they don't have to. For example a 1st round pick will likely agree to have his 4th year salary reduced to league minimum and receive the rest as a roster bonus. If the team trades the player the new team is only trading for him on the minimum salary. The original team pays the bonus at the start of the year. If the player is suspended he only loses a proportion of the salary, whilst the bonus is unaffected. The Patriots did a similar thing with Tom Brady when he was facing a 4 game suspension.

Veteran roster bonuses are generally used as a partial guarantee. For example a veteran player due $10M in his final season with no roster bonus or guarantee is vulnerable. The team can keep him throughout the preseason at no extra cost and then decide to release him at the 53-man roster cut down. He will have no time to learn another team's playbook and most teams will have already set their roster. His market might be $4M. If that player has a $3M roster payment due in March and a $7M salary the team is more likely to make the cut or keep decision before the roster bonus is due. It won't prevent the team from cutting him in September but he'd be $3M better off. If they cut him in March to avoid the bonus he'll have a better market in which to find a new team.
