Brock Purdy and his 890k cap hit for the win.
Everything hinges on this.

If Purdy is above average (not great) and takes care of the ball, this window is very open. If he regresses and the Niners are forced to soon face paying another QB real money to take advantage of this D, they are in big trouble.

Sounds counterintuitive, but if I'm a Niner fan playing the long game, I don't want Purdy to be great, I want him good enough to win, but not good enough to be overly desirable during a contract year.

Fair.

I have no idea how this will turn out so won't pretend that I do. Maybe he's second coming of Brady. Maybe he's a flash in the pan and 4 games in they are turning to Darnold. I really have no idea.

If I'm betting tho? I think he'll be Kirk Cousins-ish. He'll play point guard and distribute in Shanahans offense...but when things go south and you need a special QB to will you to a win...I just dunno.

Kyle made the move up for Trey thinking he could be one of those special guys. He saw Allen at Levis just do near impossible stuff to win that game and decided he needed to get one of those guys. Honestly if not for what happened off the field I think Deshaun Watson would be a 49er right now. The 49ers would have made that trade instead of moving up for Lance.

I really like Brock, but he's never gonna be THAT guy...the rocket armed mutant playing QB. Maybe he won't need to be.

If Brock is special it'll be because of what's between his ears, what's in his veins, and just enough athleticism to keep him alive.

It'll be fun to find out.

This thread is hilarious! Whether Bosa is signed or not, you would spin rationalizations to prove it hurts the 49ers. When people ask why is a 49er fan on a Seahawks message board, now you know!
You don't see any downsides to paying Bosa $170 million over 5 years, with $122.5 guaranteed?

JJ Watt was phenomenol when he signed his big contract. Then for 5 out of the next 6 years, from 2016 to 2021, he was either hurt or just ordinary. He had 20.5 sacks in 2014 and 17.5 sacks in 2015. After that? 1.5, 0, 16, 4, 5, and 1.

Of course there are downsides to signing him for that much money...

...but the other option is NOT signing him...so I'm good. :)

Whats the alternative? trading him for draft picks like Kinlaw , Lance , Thomas, Foster? 1st rounders don't always pan out. I'm good with the signing. At the very least he's earned it already for what he has brought over the last 4 seasons

No, you gotta pay the guy. I don't have a problem with it, there was no way he wasn't gong to reset the market. If Bosa plays like he did last year, he's worth every penny.

But the NFL punishes teams for being too good. It would make me very nervous to have so much money tied up with one player. Having Brock Purdy on a very cheap rookie contract makes it more workable, I get that, but it's still a lot of money.

they really really really really need Drake Jackson to start winning his 1v1 reps, without that the full impact of having a Bosa is lost a bit as he will continue to be doubled all day.
The D line has a chance to be utterly dominant 2019 style if the other edge performs.

Hargrave is also part of the picture to generate interior pass rush

Because you can't stand niner fans either ?
The 49er webzone is the worst sports site in the pro sports (other than the rams boards, which were clearly built before the millenium). I go there for the news links but not for the 8000 page threads. This site is pretty damn good. If only something could be done about the people who post on it.

Every situation is unique. Caps go up. Inflation seems likely to continue indefinitely since eventually the Fed rate hikes will be constrained by the debt servicing cost of the budget. And Paraag Marathe is quite the cap genius. The team as a whole will start to age out. But, yeah, ideally Bosa would just play for the love of the game.

And the downside to curing cancer is a lot of unemployed oncologists.

I mean...

You HAD to sign Bosa. My Niner disdain is deep and cultural, but freakin' Bosa is off the charts phenomenal. Smart, strong, quick, great teammate, work ethic..

The best pash rush defender in the league should have the largest paycheck, no way the Niners could sanely negotiate any other angle.

It would be like us not signing Russ for his first extension when he was in his prime. We would have lost our collective shit on .net.

Agree. Webzone and their mega threads sort of stifle their own discussions in a way.
I get most of my 49ers news here oddly.

I freaking hate SF 49ers but I'm slowly coming around on you guys. I've spent too many years in the stands listening to you mouth breathers.

But you seem ok FWIW.

I do hope Brock Purdy gets arrested with a zip tied Cambodian boy in his trunk.
