Steve Wyche of NFLam says the NFCS is the toughest division in football. Personally is see the NFCS as the most evenly matched, but not necessarily the toughest. Do you agree with Wyche? If not why?

I think most pundits have agreed that NFCW is the toughest/best division in football. With NFCN getting some votes sparsely (and understandably. They did have 3 +10 win teams last year).

But I think Wyche is just saying NFCS to add some controversy/entertainment value to a dull Tuesday morning.

I am not sure if the NFCS is the toughest and I don't know if you can say the NFCW is either from top to bottom. As a fan of a team in the division I will say that I am happy the perception is changing but most of this talk is being generated by fickle media folks. I remember when the NFCE was the perceived beast of the conference.

We will see but just a few seasons ago 7-9 won the division. From appearance sake, it seems the NFCW division is going to be a very physical division top to bottom, but I could see why someone would say the NFCS is, with the offensive firepower available in that division. And the point about the NFCN having 3 10 win teams isn't something to take lightly. Especially if the Lions rebound from their disastrous season.

I will add this. I think Wyche reported on the falcons for a few years. He may be a fan. (bias). And if you look at the NFCS from the standpoint of being in that division (very evenly matched IMHO) it may be the toughest to win. VS an outside team beating one of those teams, because of overall toughness. If that makes any sense.

The NFCS has 4 potentially good to great football teams.

The NFC West has 2 with 1 wild card and 1 team that's likely going to suck.

The NFC West will likely be the 'hardest' to win because of the Seattle/SF arms race, but in terms of competitiveness, there are more teams in the NFC South which are capable of taking the crown, IMO. So it's a fair argument to me, but I've already broached the possibility, so it probably shouldn't surprise anyone.

It's possible the NFC South may have more wins overall than the NFC West will this year, (not likely, but possible) but they are not even remotely close to the toughest division in the NFC. Toughness is more than just winning.

My opinion:
- Seahawks would beat every team at home and may lose @ Falcons
- 49ers would beat every team at home and may lose @ Falcons and @ Saints
- Rams would beat every team at home with the exception of the Falcons and may lose @ Falcons and @ Saints
- Cardinals would beat the Panthers and Buccaneers at home and lose all road games

In my opinion, the West is MUCH tougher than the South

Until the Cards and the Rams climb out of the gutter and can prove themselves to be consistently good, the west will not be the toughest overall.

I don't think the NFC South is the toughest, but I do think it is the most dangerous division. The Saints and Bucs are the only two teams visiting Seattle this year that I am even remotely nervous about (I'm not nervous at all about the 49ers in Seattle even though they are the best team we play this season, and the Rams haven't won a game here in almost a decade). Drew Brees is the only QB to ever beat Seattle in the new stadium during a 10+ win Seahawk season (34-1), so I have that game circled. The Bucs have scary potential if Freeman gets on a hot streak again, though their pass rush is the NFL's worst, which really plays in our favor given that pressuring/sacking Wilson is our greatest weakness.

Does he mean toughest conference to win games in or toughest style of play?

That is the question. I think he means offensively tough to stop teams. Most NFL teams are not that dedicated to running the ball as some in the NFC West. So I think to him physical style of playing does not equal toughest to handle/gameplan for/beat. At least that is what I assume he is thinking.

I thought it was odd too at first but he then tried to explain it and I think what he was saying was "the NFCS is the toughest to choose" while discussing where each team would place within each division. He seemed to be saying that any team in that division could place any spot 1-4 depending on strength of teams vs. strength of schedules. Basically, that division is more balanced top to bottom w/ no clear cut super/weak teams.

Based upon last year's standings (applying tiebreakers for NFC South), how do THIS YEAR's versions of team match up?

49ers vs. Falcons: EVEN
Seahawks vs. Saints: Seahawks
Rams vs. Panthers: Rams
Cardinals vs. Bucs: Bucs

Advantage: NFC West

Not sure how you can give that one to the Rams.

I'm shocked that you expressed this opinion. Truly, I am.

Honestly, just going down the two rosters, what position does STL truly have more talent than the Panthers? Maybe secondary?

I'm not going to turn this thread into a position-by-position debate between the Rams and the Panthers. I think they are pretty close from an overall talent level but, on a neutral field, I'd pick the Rams over the Panthers.

You disagree. That's fine.

Rather than fixating on that, let's stay on topic.

Which division do you think is better and why?

I think discussing your picks is pretty much on topic, if not then why did you post them?

I think the West is tougher but... I think the Hawks and Niners outweigh the Falcons and Saints, but the Bucs and Panthers are both much better than the Rams and Cards. The difference I guess is what is tough? Hawks and Niners are the two toughest teams in the league. I think with the Rams losing Jackson they lost a lot of their "toughness".
