Mystique - An air or attitude of mystery and reverence developing around something.

Last night after I got home from the game I was watching the ESPN show with Hass and the gang and Suzy Kolber mentioned the mystique of the Seahawks as it is perceived around the league. I found that to be very telling and interesting because as a diehard fan, it's hard for me to quantify the perception we have from non-Seahawks fans.

I am curious as to what you think she meant by mystique. Is it the LOB? Russell GDamn Wilson? The 12's being the loudest fans in the NFL? All of the above and more?

I know we are now reveling in being one of the Top 10 most hated NFL teams (hate = envy in the NFL world) and many NFL teams have been emulating our blueprint of success pretty much since 2012 (See: Broncos response to our defensive shutdown performance in XLVIII) but I guess I've never really considered that there is a true blue mystique about us through the eyes of the rest of the NFL world.

Anybody else catch those comments and what are your thoughts?

I'd say they use that word about any great team..Usually it's the ones who never played any sports but are sports news reporters..Then they will give worthless tibits about certain players that have nothing to do with the game just to fill their air time

Things have a way of working out for Seattle. Call it luck, call it whatever you want. I call it talent mixed with fun. The Golden Tate hail mary. The tip. The comeback against GB in the NFCCG and in particular the recovery of that onside kick. The missed FG against Minnesota. Overall success in primetime games.

Couple those events with winning set against the intimidation/disruption of the home crowd and you have mystique.

The Hawks definitely have a way of winning games that sometimes they shouldn't. Like last night statistically they got dominated in almost every category yet found a way to come out on top.

Also since Russell has been the QB the Seahawks have been on the winning (and losing) end of some of the most controversial and memorable plays in the league the past few years. The tip, SB49, Fail Mary etc.

Its interesting also how even the average NFL fan can rattle off the top of their head at least 4-5 prominent blown calls that have gone the Seahawks way the last few seasons. It means that folks are watching our games even if they are rooting for us to lose.

Really if the NFL wants to improve ratings they should put the Hawks on national TV more :D

Add in the Beastquake, Kamquake, Romo botched snap and the list goes on...Simply a very tough place to play for opposing teams and then add in the 12's energy only exacerbates it!

I think not having lost a game by more than 10 points since 2011 is part of it. They're always in it until the last play. They can win ugly and still do it with some swagger.

I'd say the mystique of the 12's, and how hard it is to play in Seattle.

The reputation of the LOB, which also has a mystique of it's own.

Also the propensity to go on a tear the last half of the season. Teams know we're better in the 2nd half of the season and we're VERY hard to beat in November and December. The freight train is picking up steam and it's coming. If Wilson keeps getting healthy every week, it's going to improve the run game, which makes us balanced and a nightmare to defend.

Let's all hope that 'mystique' doesn't become the next (way-overused) 'elite' (which rolled on from 'game manager').

If the perception of them having 'mystique' does somehow help the Hawks to win games then cool. Otherwise, it quite frankly makes no difference to me how they get perceived :p

From 2012 we've gone divisonal round - Superbowl win - Superbowl loss - divisional round. Now we're 5-2-1 atop the NFC West and holding the #2 seed in the NFC again, preparing for another deep play-off run. The only other team with that consistency are the Patriots in what is a weak division in a weaker conference.

Add being in literally every game and making the craziest comebacks and you start to get people wondering how they do it.

The Cowboys aren't doing too bad at 7-1.

Geez. Todd! You've actually written about it.

It's the "It" factor. Some hidden benefit that helps you win, helps your great players to rise to any occasion, helps you make opposing teams fear coming to the CLink because they know they will lose, regardless of their standing. It's what makes your team believe that they can always win as long as there is another second on the clock.

It's IT.

;)
