You dont get rid of an All star closer at 27 years old because he's having a down start of the season IMO

Fair enough, even though I never thought he was an elite closer.

But at the very least give him a break from these high leverage situations. I always thought the idea of having one designated closer as pretty archaic anyway. Put your best currently performing reliever in the highest leverage positions on a case by case basis

The problem I see is that he does get a break from these high leverage situations.. wayyy too much. So once he goes in, he's cold. I feel like we need to give him a relief inning or still bring him in in the 9th to keep him warm and consistent

His up and down comes from how far between his opportunities come ... just my observation

4 blown with 24 games isnt really that horrible.. it just looks bad when it happens.. plus his close calls

FWIW he had 6 BS by 33 starts last season. Then just dialed in.

But was then consistently throwing every other day or 3 days in a row

Today, I believe they said he was on 5 days rest. Too much IMO.

Odd stat.. since.. blown saves is 4 currently... Last year was 6 at 33 Games played... then not another after that.

Yet again 5 days rest. Not really sure how anyone expects a closer to be on his game with 3 4 and 5 days rest between outings.

Flame Tweets, with no context and looking at the actual picture. I love the internet

Yeah. I don't know if he has any options left, but short of a rehab assignment, I don't believe they would send him down to Tacoma. Otherwise, I'd be fine with giving him innings earlier in games just for work to keep him dialed in.

We have 4 or 5 "leverage" arms, including two lefties that could be used in the 9th. But we're getting into ego stroking territory. There is a lot of prestige, and possibly paychecks invested in being "the guy" who closes games. It's not just tradition to do it that way.

Things are a bit more complicated now. It's not like when you could bring a pitcher in for one out and then pull him. You can do that for a 3d out in an inning, but how often does that line up?

People rag on Dan, but there are 4 more months of ball left to play, more or less, and every decision has both short, medium, and long range effects. Right now, we're 3 games into a stretch of 10 games in 10 days on the road. Dan has about 250 games of experience. Sounds like a lot, but it's far from Joe Torre territory.

Oh, and we're 34-32 and still in 1st place in the division. Hardly "catastrophe" territory. 🤷‍♂️
