It takes me less time to fly from Bellingham to Vegas.

Agree. When it comes to travel to the east coast I’m ignorant. It's about 1800 km from MSP to BOS in great circle distance. It's about 1400 km from SEA to LAS.
The other thing about the maps that we normally look at is that they are Mercator projections, and they skew the hell out of things in actual distance. Alaska ends up looking like it's basically the size of the continental US.
