Even if Carp did become the LG we hope he can be, McQuinstan is still better then Sweezy at RG by a high margin. Why would we hamper our line just to give the kid more experience?

Wow. You really have not been paying attention these past few years, have you?

The answer to your question is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Not when it comes to the line man. FB's and stacked DB's are one thing. You dont save on lineman. Thats the core. Paul is the better player then Sweezy right now hands down. Hes the current starting LG (and currently better then Carp until carp can prove otherwise). If Carp and Sweezy did play, hes our best Utility Lineman who can play almost every position at a high level.

You dont crack the back of your line to save money. Thats how teams hit the dumpsters fast.

There wasn't much depth at FB behind MRob and they released him. This move isn't out of the question and to pay $3M to a backup OL when you have solid young guys like Johnson, Bailey, and Bowie (who are cheaper). It is very likely to happen (IMO).

Just curious how you figure he is a backup when he has been our starting LG for quite a while now. Line cohesion is too important to screw with putting in Carpenter (injury and weight issues) or a young guard (inexperience) just to save some money this year.

Lets just try and keep the line together and if by the middle of the season Carp or one of the other guards can supplant him fine. If Sweazy is not doing the job at RG we can move him there, if needed.

I just really hope we keep some consistency this year with the OLine and not let money be the thing that screws it up.

Yeah I don't know. I'm not saying McQuistan will get cut, especially since we're saving money from Robinson and Winfield. Just don't be surprised if it happens.

Danny Watkins had awesome college tape, and per .net's Nostradamus, he was a player our FO badly hoped would reach the 25th pick. Sometimes awesome college players are complete duds in the NFL. It happens. Watkins is old too. I'd be totally fine with kicking the tires on him next summer, but not until then (and I was a huge fan of Watkins as a prospect). Cutting McQuistan to sign Watkins would be like ditching Tjack for Matt Leinart.

I see the logic in cutting McQuistan, but I would chalk that up to a mistake move. Carpenter has less than a full season of experience at guard and isn't a lock to stay healthy. If Carp can't handle things, our next best bet is Bailey, and Bailey only played a few series at guard this preseason. Sure, Bailey was a college guard, but Tom Cable runs a very unique style of OL so those reps matter. Bowie has played a lot of guard and has looked like a natural tackle while doing it. McQuistan is a good run blocker and an adequate pass protector, and he's got excellent chemistry with Unger.

He is worth his salary, but that doesn't necessarily make him safe. Three million in cap space is a small fortune to John Schneider right now. The damage to the team from cutting Robinson was arguably more than cutting McQuistan, and he was on a $2.5 million contract. That said, if McQuistan were to be cut, I think there is a good chance we would have heard about it by now, so I'm guessing he's safe.

If Moffitt was still here then yes, but I will be suprised if Mcquistan is cut. Unless they have their eyes one someone else that was cut from another team. Best case scenerio is he stays and takes a pay cut. I remember in the past when a lineman went down the opposing team would just blitz at the backup and we would be in trouble. After wacthing the backups against the Faders I'm not comfortable with the backups. Although when sandwiched in between to pro bowlers, the backups would probably look a lot better then when playing with other backups
