I was confused by that too, but he really screwed up because the ball wasn't moving towards the end zone and a Cardinal was falling on it. It wasn't going to be advanced and he may have touched it without securing it. Easy for me to say, while watching on my TV.....but he should have just been ready to hit the cardinal who grabbed it.
