So last week Dustin Kellar gets his knee blown out and a lot of people are upset. Than we see KJ deliver a perfectly legal, textbook how they want it tackle. What does he get for going out of his way to deliver the tackle? That right a flag in the face anyways, cause it was across the middle and a hard hit? Why don't they use there great replay system and just punish players with fines/suspensions after the fact? Why leave it up to the refs to try to enforce this rule, when obviously they blow it half the time anymore?

The refs are in over kill mode right now in pre season to deliver a message to players, I'm sure that it will be less intrusive as the season goes on.

Well here is a better question for you actually. Before watching last weeks game and this weeks game, they had the big nfl highlight reel of plays. Half the hits delivered by defensive players in these reels are illegal plays. Why would they allow CBS and Fox to show highlight reels of illegal plays to try and sell there product?

Goodell has done many good things for football, but the way he's approached player safety has made good officiating nearly impossible.

The problem is that with "player safety" penalties, the refs don't have to actually see an obvious foul being committed...if it looks like somebody gets hit hard, they throw a penalty flag even if they don't see helmet-to-helmet contact.

What really really worries me is that this might cause the demise of our great team. The Seahawks are tough as hell, but is that style going to cost them in the modern era?

I think we will see more penalties called this year than ever before in the NFL. The players sign waivers before they play the game knowing it is a dangerous sport, but because the NFL didn't do EVERYTHING in their power to maintain player safety, those players are coming back with lawsuits against the NFL.

From now on, the NFL will need evidence against players showing that the player is responsible for the ailment for which he is filing a lawsuit. A player in the future filing a suit for concussion related injuries will be shown to have delivered illegal hits or leading with his helmet on the defensive side and offensive players will be shown that a flag was thrown so they see how they tried to protect players. Without the penalties, players can come back later and file even more suits against the NFL for not doing everything they could in the name of safety.

Before you blame Goodell for every little negative thing in football, you should realize that the competition committee makes the rule changes and usually contains head coaches.

Concussions are a legitimate concern and they are trying to regulate head blows out of the game. The problem arises when you have untouchable union referees interpreting the rules. If Roger thinks they are calling it to tight, there's not a whole lot he can do about it if the referees as a group disagree.
