It looks like he gets the concussion from his head hitting the turf. I know pro-wrestlers learn over and over that when you fall you tuck your head in to prevent whiplash and your head hitting the ground. Maybe they need to teach this football players, I don't know.

Again, players need to take responsability for their own safety. When I did Jiu Jitsu, we practiced falling down. Break-fall with your hands, tuck your chin into your chest (so your head doesn't bounce off the mat), know where your head is going to go, know where the threat is going to come from next. Some of these dumbshit football players just flailing about make me shake my head... Doesn't anyone know the fundamentals anymore!? Granted, Lowery was probably too in shock to think of any of that stuff because he didn't have his head on a swivel and got blown up, but STILL! C'mon man.... you're on a FOOTBALL FIELD, not Disneyland!!

OMG I think I just channeled Dave Wyman...

I am in love with the fact that our coaches are teaching our receivers AND DBs all about how they can knock the crap out of people within the rules. There is way more "physicality" allowed in the rules than most people, and what seems like a majority of NFL players as well, seem to know about. The "No Fun League" crowd should remember this the next time they want to complain. Most players are not taking advantage of things available to them.

Could you imagine an NFL team with Hines Ward and Golden Tate? especially say 5-10 years ago when the rules were a bit nicer about their style of football

that would be awesome to see
Big difference. Hinesend Ward was a cheap shot artist and dirty player, Tate's hits have been legal!

The NFL disagrees. Tate was fined $21k for the hit on Lowery and was fined last year for the Sean Lee hit.

I do NOT agree with the fines but the point is that during the era that Hines Ward played most of his hits were legal. During the era that Tate plays most of his hits should be legal but are apparently not

He was blocking, if the ball had went to the person that was faked it to would it have been a fine, NFL is fining almost any play that is in appearence a impactive block or tackle.

This is launching from the blindside from the helmet to the chin. Lowery is lucky he isn't out for the season. This is EXACTLY the hit the NFL is trying to keep from happening. Exactly. If that was Chancellor hit by Steve Smith like that, we would be crying for a suspension. Dirty, season ending play. Absolutely fineable. Just like the Lee hit.

What is funny is that in NBA you call this a good screen.... For some reason in the NBA players are responsible for looking around the floor when they are moving but for some reason in the NFL the players are supposed to make sure the opponent is looking at them when they tackle.

I see shoulder to chest. It's unreasonable to think a players head won't inadvertently hit up high when you're hitting there

It's a crack block and you'll see it during every high school game in the country tonight. The only thing they might get out of it is helmet contact, but it's not a dirty hit.

Sorry, not a dirty play. The Sean Lee hit was clean and I believe this one is too, but I would like to see it from more angles. I have no doubt about the Sean Lee hit. Teams do need to coach players to tuck their chin so they don't whiplash so much when they go to the ground. It should be second nature.

How is it a blindside? He hit him in the chest.... last time I checked that's in the front right?

Imagine getting find because the other player is terribly coached and has no football awareness. We should start fining defenses for intercepting passes if the QB didn't see them

All seeing, all knowing and always erring against our players and team. Ho, hum...I'm not surprised.

Yeah, that's why the first area contacted was the chest. The rest was incidental contact. Try again. Defenseless might be a better angle.

NFL says Seahawks WR Golden Tate was fined $21,000 for blindside block on Jags S Dwight Lowery.

NFL strikes again.

A little more info from PFT.

Lowery suffered a concussion on the play. Tate will now suffer the removal of $21,000 from his paycheck, pending appeal.

The NFL says Tate was fined for the hit, even though he wans’t fined. It wasn’t a blindside block per se; Lowery was considered to be in a defenseless posture, protecting him against a helmet-to-helmet hit. That’s the new rule added in March, given last year’s hit by former Jets guard Matt Slauson on Texans linebacker Brian Cushing.
