Every OC in history, at one point had no play calling experience. Just have to trust your gut and go with it
Very true, so if we grab Fraley, I'll trust that Macdonald and Schneider have the sense that the guy is prepared for that aspect of the game.

I think what creates the bigger apprehension (on my end, at least) is that he's going to be under a second-year HC who is also the defensive play caller. That means he's not only the play caller, he doesn't have a HC he can lean on in terms of that side of the ball.

But if he ends up here and not Chicago, it means he's also very interested in calling his own offense and feels he's ready for it (otherwise, he could probably take a job with Johnson and get to be the OC without having to be the play caller).

Yep. Just because Grubb didn't work out, it certainly doesn't mean that Fraley wouldn't.
Yup.

Fraley has coached and played in the NFL. He knows the game. He knows how to relate to players. He's been in a winning culture. He understands how to maximize the performance of an o line.

All things that Grubb had no idea about.

I'm not necessarily against Fraley, but looking at a couple of Lions boards, they seem to be under the impression that he's not even under consideration to replace Ben Johnson as their OC. If true, isn't that a big red flag? Given their recent success, you'd think they'd prioritize continuity and Fraley has been with them for seven years now. It's being reported that the leading candidates are their current running backs coach, who just joined their coaching staff last year, and their current "passing game coordinator".

Fraley has been my number one choice for a while now. Everyone knows our OL has been a problem for years. He would have the best chance of fixing that over any of the other candidates mentioned.

But the problem with Fraley is, I think MM wants to be primarily hands off on the offensive side of the ball so he can concentrate on the defense. Would someone like Fraley with no play-calling experience allow MM the freedom he needs to concentrate on building and running his defense?

I think that's a legitimate question that has to be addressed in all this. Would getting an experienced and successful passing game coordinator to pair with Fraley be enough?

On the other hand, there's a lot of talk about Uzinski and it seems he would pose the same issue given his lack of experience, so it's a dilemma.

But of the names that have been tossed around, these are my top two and I would be happy with either one.

Thats the challenge with Fraley. YES. He knows offense via the o line, but even on game days, he is more managing the technical aspects of the unit. That is entirely different than being directly associated with either the run or pass game, because in those positions, you are managing one aspect of an offensive attack. Its easier to get a feel for the flow of the game, how the run and pass compliment eachother, and how you leverage one against the other. That's not something you necessatily get on the o line.

Have to admit, that is a little concerning if true.

We do currently still have Leslie Frazier. I know he is defensive minded but he’s been a head coach. It doesn’t bother me as much
