Answer: Because the Seahawks gave him what they consider to be a fair offer and are allowing him to seek better offers that the team will ultimately match or not match depending on the dollars involved.

This allows Clowney to shop knowing he has a fall-back position if he doesn't get any other offers, which means he can be sure that the money he's getting is his value on the open market, so he's not being short-changed and at the same time the Seahawks are not overpaying.

If the Seahwks did it right, then lines of communication are open and if Clowney is offered a deal by another team Clowney will allow the Seahawks the opportunity to match. If the Seahawks did it wrong, then he'll leave in a huff. More often that not, however, JS gets it right.

It's a process.

Seahawks offered what they felt he is worth. It's up to him.

He had all of 3 sacks last season.... 3. Yes, his impact goes beyond sacks; but, production talks. He is commanding $6 million per sack.

Quite honestly, with Ken Norton still calling the defense I'm not sure if it matters whether we have Clowney or not. I'd love to have him back, but it's hard to get excited about another season with Norton way in over his head every game. The defense got pushed around last season WITH Clowney playing.

And the Seahawks backup plan? Being last in the league next year in sacks, hurries, knockdowns etc while our decent CBs and safeties look like crap when the opposing QB has 20 Mississippis to throw the ball. Heck, maybe they’ll compound their stupidity by drafting a crappy DE to replace the crappy DE they drafted in the first round last year.

I believe their backup plan would be Everson Griffen. They also added Bruce Irvin. Hopefully Collier can show something (anything) this year and they will draft a guy who can be more productive right away. I’m sure they will still acquire another vet along the way.
