Erstwhile Kingdome chants

As I grew up in the Midwest, I didn't have many chances to see televised Seahawk games in the 80s. I had even less of a chance to watch them play in the Kingdome. On these rare occasions, however, I recall a memorable, resonant chorus that filled the stadium, which I'll now embarrassingly attempt to phonetically transcribe:

GOOOOOOoooooooooooo! SSSEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeee Hhhhaaaaawwwksssss!

It was a very spread-out chant, and it loomed around the old concrete structure like an ambient wreath. It added to the mystique of the team, even from 2000 miles away on a mono TV speaker.

Hearing younger fans and their/our current C-HAUWks! chant just doesn't compare to the old iteration, with all due respect.

Anyone remember this old chant, and roughly when it died out?

Yep, similar to when they yell alternating "Tex-as!" and "Fight!" at Texas Longhorns games.

I, too, would like to know how/why this chant went away, because I really liked it too when I heard it on the once-a-season-televised-Seahawks-home-game while growing up in the south. Seems like it would be ideal for the CLink with the way the two sides are somewhat enclosed.

That's the one. That's the one.

I'm glad that I wasn't hearing things. That was powerful stuff.

Sad that people don't remember that chant. Shows how long ago that was. That and how much of our fan base doesn't go back to those "good ol' days". I miss that chant. Mainly for nostalgia reasons. But also because the new "Sea-Hawks! Sea-Hawks! Sea-Hawks!" chant is exhausting. Always ends up speeding up as the crowd gets tired. It's fun at first, but then goes off the rails.

BFS and myself were talking about this very thing in NY. Mark Collins from Save Our Seahawks was at Carlow East a couple nights before the Super Bowl. The owners of the bar introduced him to the crowd and gave him the floor to make a speech. All he did was stand up on the bar and led the old school "Go! Seahawks!" chant. It was cool. But also kinda sad seeing how clueless and disinterested the fans were as opposed to when they get to do the new one. That as well as how many didn't really follow when the Carlow East guy introduced him, talking about Ken Behring trying to move the team to LA. So many of the fans had no clue. Eh, it is what it is, I guess. That was a long time ago, I have to tell myself. Guess us old farts just have to be cool with it and allow the new kids to have their time in the sun. Not much to be gained with being old and curmudgeonly.

It may largely go unnoticed, but that's got to up my street cred, dammit!

In those days I was forced to get my fix on the radio (driving truck in AK) and sadly either missed that chant or don't remember it. But having been to a home victory (Green Bay) exiting the stadium with sea HAWKS ringing in my ears is hard to beat :th2thumbs:

I'm not so sure about that, you do live in Graham, and Throwdown has already given us a bad rap down here. :sarcasm_off:

I remember that Chant and thin it is much better than the new one. As somebody else stated the new one can never maintain, after about the 5th time it speeds up.

Bill would run around the dome and get it started, one side go, other side Seahawks, then point back and forth till it built up. The circular sound was partially due to him running and popinting till it got synced up.

Also did the Wave .

I've wanted to get that old-dome chant going for the past 12 years, but never solicited the required fan participation.

Hey .Net, I've got section 316 covered!

eastside: GOOOOooooooooooo!!

westside: SeeaaaHaaawwksss!!

Like our team and fans aren't intimidating enough!!
That slooooooow chant would burrow into the heads of opposing players...

Geez. Im feeling particularly old at the moment. I remember that chant, and the way it banged around off the concrete sky of the kingdome. I recall staring up at the catwalk thinking it was ironic how some days you couldnt tell the inside sky from the pastey mess outside...and i also remeber crying in school when they showed footage of the trucks trying to leave. Behring was a first class Ahole.

I remember that chant too. I think the reason it's not done now is that we've really just focused on making the maximum amount of noise while our defense is on the field. That's different from how I remember the Kingdome, but I only attended a few games back then, so I may be wrong.

I think it went away with Bill the Beerman. Too bad he didn't live to see XLVIII.

I think they tried to revive that chant a few years back at one of the games at C-link. They had the cheerleaders hold up signs with "Go" for one side of the stadium and "Seahawks" on the other. Even with that the chant never took off that game.

I remember that chant. It was 100% Bill the Beerman that got that chant going, he would run over to one side (usually a corner of the endzone) and tell all the people to watch him and when they hear GO, they were to say Seahawks, then he would run to the other corner of the stadium and start it, it was comical watching the whole thing play out but was alot of fun. I also saw him start most of the sustained "waves" that went around the kingdome. I still remember a wave that went for the entire 3rd quarter, we were playing the Steelers. It was pretty wild to see it go that long. When we were on offense, it kept going with very little noise and then it was louder when we were on defense. it was the strike year I believe and we won that game pretty handily. but I have always been a fan of Bill Scott (RIP) and his cheers. You all know that he made a career out of being an entertainer after his Beerman days were over.
