Wouldn't go that far. Fournette is going to be churning out yards in the NFL for some time, assuming he can stay healthy. He's legit. Just because Carson is also legit, I don't think it downplays other's abilities even though Carson could very well have the better career.

I think we're beyond the hype point in regards to Carson.

He's demonstrated true quality as a rusher. Excellent quality as a WR option on third down. And good quality as a pass protector. Consistently. Against starter grade opposition.

He'll make the team. And make the active 53. At worst, he's the hedge for Procise, as he's shown the ability to be an effective 3rd down back. He'll play and get carries. If we end up cutting Lacy at the top and going with Rawls/Carson as feature backs, with Procise/Carson as 3rd down options he will have a big impact.

If we keep Lacy and go Lacy/Rawls; Procise/Carson -- then I kind of see Carson getting Robert Turbin type of touches as the season moves along. Some third down action. Maybe 2-3 targets a game. And 2-5 carries a game.

I would not be surprised to see either Rawls or Procise starting the season on the PUP list. They are both fragile...along with P-Rich. No saying what Carson's durability is, but I sure feel better with him there considering neither Rawls nor Procise have been healthy for an entire season. Collins is as good as gone. McKissic may stick due to special teams and a Lockett back-up in returns.

Turbin had a bad habit of tripping on turf when he ran the ball, every chance Carson has got he has excelled, even on minimal gains he has powered to prevent a loss on most and is leaning the right direction.

There's a lot to like. Carson made a great adjustment to catch that deep 37 yard pass on an improvised play. He also broke out of numerous tackles from starting front seven defenders including one where he was absolutely crushed in the backfield but somehow spun out and turned it into a short game. I expect a full on committee for a good part of the season but the cream always rises to the top and Chris Carson will be a player that emerges as the season wears on, health permittting.

I wasn't comparing the two prospects that way. More that I was comparing the expected touches and role for this year. Carson looks better than Turbin did. More explosive for sure. Doesn't appear to leave yards on the field. Now let's hope he doesn't also have Turbin's luck and have every 10+ yard run called back on a hold.

If Seattle goes RBBC with Lacy/Rawls, then Carson's role is going to be not unlike Turbin's as the #2 to Lynch who was a feature back. If we go Rawls/Carson then his role is going to be much more pronounced. And if Procise can't get on the field, he's going to probably split time with Lacy as the 3rd down back.

Honestly, Carson looks like the Richard Sherman of this year's draft. An elite talent picked up for next to nothing. (in the NFL scheme of things)

I know that it's only Preseason ... but from the little that I've seen, I'd have to agree with your sentiment. Like most of us, I hadn't heard a blasted thing about Chris Carson until he was drafted. Then, after reading every report I could get my hands on and watching every bit of available game footage out there I could find, I began to understand WHY Pete Carroll was so excited about this guy.

And everything that I've read about and seen on film -- the tough running style, consistently getting YAC, the shiftiness, great vision and ability to hit the holes quickly, great hands, great blocking -- all of that has continued to show up during training camp and into the Preseason games against other teams FIRST UNIT defenses.

I don't know about him eventually becoming the STARTER ... BUT, I definitely see him getting his share of carries during regular season games, that's for sure. I would agree with Atylla in saying that I see him sliding into that change of pace back (ala Robert Turbin) role ... being that guy that when Lacy or Rawls needs a breather, slides in there ... and the running game and the overall offense doesn't miss a beat. Like Pete Carroll, I absolutely LOVE this guy too. What a gold nugget find in the 7th Round! :2thumbs:

He was a Pete Carroll pick. I say if you gave Carroll a week & a youtube account, he would put together an excellent draft on par with his 2010-12 classes. Hell, he would probably have a solid class with only 7th round picks and UDFAs. All the extra "evaluation" just muddies the water, IMO.

People tend to hype so much that they assume everybody else does it. So when sober, thoughtful fans say something like, "Carson has won a spot on the 53" somehow that gets heard that I'm nominating him for his bust in Canton.

:141847_bnono:

Carson has done well this preseason. IMHO he will make the roster cut to the 53. I doubt he will be the feature back on Day 1, unless Lacy or Rawls get cut or IR'd. Might be some tough choices, but if we keep 4 RB, I suspect Carson will be there. With what he's shown so far, I could see him being the feature back by Oct or so. But probably not right off the bat.

I put his highlight tape on from Ok. state.

He always runs north south
Good receiver
Good ball security
Nose for the endzone

All things we have seen from him in the preseason with the seahawks

I'm not sold on him yet. I still think Rawls and Procise are more skilled overall, however the injury thing is really obnoxious with both of them. If he's able to get open like he did last game on a consistent basis as a wide receiver and a runner it will benefit us greatly. As much as I didn't like the Lacy signing I'm starting to be a little more thankful we at least have a big guy to give the ball to. I still think we should try to draft a big bruiser next year.

Shows serious potential.

Kid runs HARD.

Too early to say he is "the one" but it's nice to have some hope!

He was a below the radar kid because he was in a passing offense, but it is also why he pass blocks, runs good routes and catches the ball well.

To answer someone about Rawls in preseason, I remember him getting 100+ yards and 2td with 6+ ypc in game 4. So we should expect somethink similar from Carson if he is to challenge for starting spot

Please, hype? From a 7th round pick?

Robert Turbin... 4th Round...2012
Christine Michael... 2nd Round... 2013
CJ Prosise... 3rd Round...2016
Alex Collins...5th Round...2016
Zay Brooks... 7th Round...2016

We lived through some poor expectations.

Turbin and Michael get beat out by the undrafted Thomas Rawls in pre-season 2015. One was traded, all body, zero brain and zero brawn fake tough guy.

The other was a sort-of staple for three seasons that ran too hot and cold. He was waived with an injury settlement despite it being a relatively short recovery.

Rawls was one of the best RBs that season... tough, unpredictable, and a physical ball of energy... until succumbing to that broken leg, a grueling rehab, and then more injury set-backs to a season in 2016 where you could tell... He just didn't have it... whatever made him special... all the way.

Prosise is an electric play-maker and showed grit as a raw runner by trying to be tough in the trenches. But only in 5 games. With, IIRC, only real impact in 4 of those contests. The dude can't stay healthy this pre-season and I don't think he was available much last pre-season. So this time last year it was all question marks for him... much like Amara Darboh. Hype was surrounding the 3rd Round Draft Chip and the idea of a homegrown Percy Harvin more than the player, imo.

Alex Collins... I love the dude... I was really excited for his talent... but its hardly translating. You just don't see the fire from him like you do in perhaps Lynch, perhaps Rawls, perhaps Carson. I think if this was 10-12 years ago (back when workhorse back meant something), behind a dominant Offensive Line, I think Collins could have found his groove to be successful getting 25+ carries a game maybe similar to an Alexander-esque runner.

Zac Brooks... pretty much every ounce of what little hype he had manifested into JD McKissic.

As for those true " Pre-Season Hype" Trains in last 5 years that I can really remember.

Michael 2013 & 2014? (2nd Round)
Rawls 2015 (UDFA)
Pope 2016 (Not drafted or originally signed by Seahawks)
Carson 2017 (7th Round)

To me the hype isn't really centered around Carson perhaps being bigger, tougher, faster, stronger, more kick-ass than both his peers and his opponents. That stuff is easier when the games mean junk.

The hype to me... is more... is it more than Luck?... if he understands it, the game, his abilities, his abilities within the game, and if he knows how to harness it paired with being smart on the field. And from what I've seen... he has impressed in every opportunity and has shown remarkable poise in taking it all in professionally.

Hype, schype. Carson, no matter what, has just been proving that he has what it takes to be a player in this league.

Not saying Carson will dominate the league but I will say the player he can become would be something similar to taking Thomas Rawls and putting him into Christine Michaels body.

I'm really loving the RB depth. This is easily the best group we've ever had in Seattle.

We are most likely keeping 5 RB/FB on the roster this year. It appears that Lacy, Rawls, Carson, and Procise are the 4 RB's most likely to make it.

WHat's exciting is all 4 of those guys are on the bigger size (even Procise is in the 215-220 range). That gives us 3 hammers and 1 multi-purpose back. The running game should be drastically improved this year with this depth and competition.

I can't wait to see us bludgeon the Packers in week 1 (My best friends team is the Packers, so we've been talking a lot of junk recently.)
