CBS snags Thursday night games

CBS has such a poor picture for football games in the Seattle area. My guess is that KIRO is cheap and saves money by not devoting full resources to the picture quality.

Anyone that lives out of the area and isn't served by KIRO, how is your picture for NFL games on KIRO.

Really? CBS has great quality for me. I kinda prefer it over fox

But if you live out of the area then you don't get KIRO. And even if you are using antennae it is all digital now, so the channels are the same quality unless you're in the gray area where the picture goes blank at times. In the days of standard definition I remember 7 being one of the worst, 5 and 13 were the best.

What does KIRO have to do with NFL games? Nothing. Same with KCPQ. They are just local but we're all getting CBS, NBC, FOX, ESPN for our games. Local affiliates don't mean squat when it comes to NFL games other than preseason where we get Steve Raible, Warren Moon or Brock Huard.

It actually means a lot when we are trying to determine if KIRO is giving us less of a picture than CBS is providing. You just said you lived in Seattle but at the time we didn't know. We are just trying to compare apples to apples. Since you live in Seattle and are getting a great picture I can factor that in. I do know that when I watch NFL games on CBS the picture is significantly worse than Fox, ESPN, or NBC. I know CBS has a great picture because for their primetime schedule they have always had a nice picture so I am suspicious that KIRO is trying to save some money by downgrading their NFL picture quality.

Are you sure that your TV provider are giving you KIRO in HD? Not sure who your provider is etc but with Directv I had two locals for a long time that were stretched SD and the other locals were HD then after awhile they became HD.

That's not true. They can definitely vary the quality of HD. On Netflix and Amazon Prime they all call their videos HD and the Amazon Prime videos are higher quality that the Netflix videos even though they are both good. Amazon Prime transfers data on mine at 50 Mb/s and Netflix only gets to around 22 Mb/s and the difference in quality is definitely there. Plus you have the whole 1080I, 1080P, and 720P which are all considered HD.

I am glad you brought that up though because it made me rethink what I don't like about their picture. The picture looks great when there is not much motion. However when there is a bunch of motion on the screen it looks pretty terrible. Maybe it is more of a refresh rate issue than a HD issue. This doesn't happen on any other channel that CBS and only with football. It looks fantastic on any of their shows. Person of Interest looks great. That is what makes me suspicious of KIRO holding something back but maybe it is an HD camera issue in regards to NFL games.

Amazon and Prime bad picture is due to the compression used to transmit the data to you. It is different than the HD picture being degraded

That is not an issue with your TV provider as they use the same methods across the board

You sure? Cause CBS games just look better than Fox to me.

CBS's slow motion looks better than FOX's. I know that much. They must use a higher frame rate or something. I'm not really a video guy so I don't know how that all works.
