Various sources, including PFT, are reporting that Brock Purdy will most likely not have Tommy John surgery on his UCL and will instead get a different procedure that will have him throwing in 3 months, and supposedly 100% in six months.

This seems like the worst path to take. Better for Purdy to have the Tommy John and come back 100%, knowing he did the best for his elbow, with Trey Lance as the starter for next season. I've never heard of this other procedure, and does this mean that a less than 100% Purdy competes against Trey Lance for the QB job? Sounds like a recipe for disaster.

I don't blame him for considering coming back sooner. He has a starting job right now but every day he's not healthy is a day that someone else could make it harder. It's not like he's on a 6 year 150M contract.

Some info on the brace procedure

Nick Mullens is the only other nfl qb to get this procedure. The 9ers let Him go to free agency. Cut after Philly off-season, signed with Browns to the practice squad. Took him a year to get rostered again.

I would imagine they consulted numerous surgeons on this..its not like normal people who just get one opinion.

Yes, Purdy was noted to have gotten a second opinion.

It wasn't Purdy who beat us. SF controlled the LOS both sides of the ball.

All football matchups start up front, so that's not a hugely revelatory statement. That said, Purdy played pretty dam well against the Hawks in both games. SF's offense doesn't need a QB to do much more than play smart and take care of the ball.

it's funny how few QBs can do that at the NFL level.

He won't be back in 6 months.

Throwing a football is tough on the elbow. Not as tough as trying to throw a baseball with everything you got, but still tough.

Baseball pitchers warm up using a football, a revolutionary technique introduced by pitching coach Tom House, to lessen the affects of the rotational torque of throwing a baseball. It conditions the UCL to these forces which are considerable.

Baseball pitchers don't get hit in the elbow by a 250 lb lineman running a 4.8 40 yard. The point of the injury was it was secondary to trauma or a "clean break". The ligament is healthy and does not need replacement. The procedure attaches the healthy tissue to allow it to heal. Pitchers that need Tommy John have the ligament replaced because it has degenerated and worn out with the chronic stress of pitching. It needs full replacement because it is not healthy. the tear occurred secondary to the chronic degeneration
