Dude had his demons for sure, it's nice that he was trying to help others. What an animal on the field. RIP young man.

I remember that first play from scrimmage in the 2013 NFCCG when he knocked the ball out of RW's hands. That was not fun. That dude was a beast. Should been an all-time great. RIP.

Incredibly sad for him and his family. He always had an impact against us when we played.

RIP young man. Too young for sure. I hope you find peace.

There isn't much info in this article to extract a cause of death from, but we can probably rule out cancer as his death apparently occurred very quickly like a heart attack or seizure:

Smith was found unresponsive by a friend on Saturday morning, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

A friend, Amir Shirazi, had been helping Smith deliver a donation of pizzas to a charity for homeless people before his passing. Shirazi and Smith drove back to Shirazi's home following the delivery. Shirazi stepped inside and when he returned to the truck, that's when he found Smith slumped over and unresponsive.

“He was perfectly fine an hour before,” Shirazi said told the Chronicle. “I came out and he was basically dead in my front seat. I’m just in shock.”

Smith was officially pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose, less than an hour later. Shirazi believes his friend's death was due to natural causes, but doesn't know for certain.

Shirazi said that his friend was struggling financially and bounced around to friends' homes while he waited for his NFL pension to kick in. According to the NFL, a player can start receiving a pension at age 55. Smith was 36.

Despite a history of substance abuse, Shirazi said he hadn't seen Smith use drugs on the day of his death and he only smoked marijuana occasionally through the years.

“He was a very sweet, caring, loving giant,” Shirazi said. “That if you really knew him, you’d know who he truly is.”

My stepson died suddenly of a seizure when he was in his early 30's. He wasn't a heavy drug user but smoked tons of weed. We're pretty sure that his seizures were brought on by his screwing around extracting oil from marijuana seeds as it apparently gives an intense high. The seizures aren't caused by the cannabis but rather the butane used in the extraction process.

I think he was a good kid, with a good heart, but the mental side was what he struggled with. Even when he got in trouble, it wasn't really bad stuff, just poor decisions.

God Bless You Aldon Smith.
