what a mess. even the 49ers organization now think trey lance is a bust. baker mayfield? the 3 1sts and 3rd for a QB that will get replaced by baker mayfield? the same baker mayfield that was on 3 teams last season?

desperate times, desperate measures.

While I agree with seatown, part of me hopes this is a new sign of the times where the qb position is heading in a devalued trajectory. Find some bum off the street who doesn't give the ball away and you can win. Sounds like a more interesting version of football than the current iteration where you shaft-pump the next stooge coming out of college with "all the measurables" because "you can't win without a franchise qb". Boring.

well that is how the league wants it. the qbs are the prima donna's, the heralded, over-marketed golden children. 17 out of the last 18 regular season mvps were QBs. QB is 1 of 22 positions

it used to be that running backs mattered. there were fullbacks. where did fullbacks go? wars were fought in the trenches over a few yards. those yards mattered. it used to be you could hit a guy without a flag. kenny easley and steve atwater wouldn't exist in todays game. it used to be you could tackle a QB without worrying about a flag. it used to be that defensive backs could touch receivers without it being holding or pi.

*sigh*

All true. As one of my buddies back east says when I go on one of these rants, "ok, boomer".

I still hold out hope that the fundamental tenents of football will always matter. That a guy like Pete Carrol will come along and inovate and find a way to stay true to what always wins championships. I'm tired of the current model that wins at this level, be nice to watch good football for a change.

Mayfield won’t bite on them tho. Like I said, he couldn’t tolerate being a third string healthy inactive And his market bears more. If he will do a deal it’ll be with the Rams. Or if they decline, then with the Lions.

Yeah, it's pretty sad.

What gives you the idea they think he is a bust? The 49ers will have to sign a veteran QB as a back up as it is likely that Purdy will be delayed in coming back. Also need a 3rd QB regardless.

Fine but Lance will still be starting regardless of who they sign. They have to sign someone. Need 3 QBs

I would rather have Baker instead of Geno. NOT at the 35mill he's getting.

Here's an article about Lance that adds a little weight to the non-bust side of the scales of football justice:

With Purdy scoring in the 95th percentile, Ally's comments suggest that Lance scored around the 88th-95th percentile, with sources revealing to Martinez that the 2021 third overall pick actually scored within the 91st-93rd percentile on the cognition test.

"His S2 report would suggest that he needs the reps and he will succeed," Ally said to Martinez. "Even at high school football, it's hard to get reps that are 'wasted reps'".

There are reports that the 49ers are also considering Matt Ryan, which makes sense since Shanahan was Ryan's OC the year the Falcons went to the Super Bowl.

Ryan might be more willing to play a spot starter/backup role than Mayfield.
