Eh, there really weren't that many opportunities to run the ball. We were in catch-up mode for most of the second half and only ran 18 plays in the first half.

The issue was the defense's inability to get off the field, which completely negated our ability to run a balanced offense. We lost the TOP battle by 15 minutes. It's hard to find balance when you have no rhythm.

Looks like a guy who thinks he's still in college to me. That type of gameplan works in the NCAA, he better learn quickly that it's not ideal in the NFL.

The point remains, this has been an issue across multiple coordinators, even the guy that was obsessed with the running game in his other stints (Schottenheimer). Carroll historically was a huge stickler for strong running games, including spending a large amount of draft capital on running backs.
Go figure that we led the league in rushing in 2018 and were top 5 in 2019. Looked awesome.

2020 came LRC and we haven't gotten right since.

I have serious concerns that on-field decisions are being dictated by an ownership group that got radicalized by the fan uproar against "Peteball" after 2019, emboldened by the hot start in 2020, and has been nudging the team in that direction since.

Grubb is trash, he needs to be on the sidelines not the booth. I do not like him I say.

This is one of the issues I had with the offenses play calling last year. If we don’t run effectively and consistently our passing game suffers. If we don’t run the ball we can’t have an effective run game.

Wasn't this the kind of dumb shit Grubb was known for at UW?

UW had one of the best offenses in college football while Grubb was there. I don't think anyone that has any idea what they're talking about would say Grubb was known for dumb shit, or dumb play calling, at UW.

In my opinion, there is no excuse for running the ball 7 times. As an Offensive play caller he needs to go in the locker room and apologize to the team for that. I think I even seen K9 have a run where he almost broke one, and heard the next play call then made a face like what. You eant me to come off the field.

We will never be good on offense if we are one dimensional

Unfortunately the interior of our offensive line sucks. It has sucked for years now. It will continue to suck as long as we have Schneider as our GM. He under values the position and has pretty much said that. The last time we had a good interior lineman, Unger, Schneider traded him away for a TE who couldn’t block

This year we can’t run between the Tackles

I am usually not negative but year after year we have the same problem

No truer words were ever spoke.

I'm not (yet) anti-Grubb, but he did all kinds of dumb shit at the Dub. Backed up inside our own 20, game on the line, 3rd and 1, best O line in college football...throw deep. He did this several times. Grubb and DeBoer played high risk, high reward football. Thanks to the OL, the best receiver room in college history and Mike Penix, they for the most part, got away with that. Many games he called just like today's. Pass pass pass pass pass run. And he had no idea how to properly use our excellent TEs. Many of us did not want for his return to Montlake, even before learning DeBoer would bail. He made Penix a 1st rd pick but he also made the kid a basketcase. I'm not wrong.

It would be too easy to challenge this in saying "he took us to the natty game". Yes, he did, with Pete's players, a large percentage of who are now playing in the NFL. It was a virtual all star team. DeBoer and Grubb fell into the perfect sistuation with the Huskies. Now we get to see what they can do playing on a more level playing field.

40 passes, 4 QB runs, and 7 sacks. 7 RB runs.
To call it a 44 to 7, pass to run split might be generous.

In a lofty place tanglin' with Satan over history.

I didn't watch a whole bunch of Husky games last year, but the ones that I did watch, including the Natty, I can't really argue with this post. The Nation's best line, receiver room + Heisman runner up part is the glaring difference between Huskies and Hawks. He better learn QUICK just who his personnel is and put them in a position to succeed.

Yeah while I think it has to get better and it will, game flow was weird and situationally they were handcuffed. I’m not saying people are wrong for the split numbers because I’m sure Grubb would say the same thing today. I think the offensive line on tape hasn’t run blocked very well either and Grubb was trying to highlight a mismatch in their defense too. I’m rambling but it all added up to what happened.

I’m not worried about Grubb moving forward and this game will end up being an outlier. Even with this split and the defense not playing well they left ALOT of plays on the field. Metcalf fumble was huge, Geno had a wide open JSN on a crucial third down that he didn’t see, JSN drop etc. make a couple of plays and you still win.

They will figure it out and be fine

This was one of my thoughts, too, that we didn't even try to run the ball. Grubbs was calling plays as if he was behind by three touchdowns. Our running backs got a grand total of 6 carries. And it showed up in the time of possession, which compounded the problems of an already struggling defense.

I understand that it was just one game, but this one in which even though both units were playing poorly that we should have won. Oh, well.

Well the defense not being able to get off the field in the first half and a lot of the second half didn't help those numbers. Being down two scores in the 4th certainly didn't help those numbers either. Our OLine not being able to open up holes played a huge part in that as well. I agree walker needs more carries, but the reality of that game was they were taking what the defense was giving when they did have the ball. Which was not very often.

I can't even come up with a good defense of it.

Random thought: I hope ownership isn't dictating this suicidally pass-heavy crap. Kolde is notable for doing similar stuff with the Blazers.
This. They didn't even attempt to run the ball. Unreal. K9 is a phenomenal back. Geno has NO time back there, and they just keep calling pass plays over and over again. I like Grubb, always have. But he was brutal yesterday.
