Pretty much all of the conversation about that play has been about how McCaffrey needs to catch that (and he does). I haven't heard anybody talking about the degree of difficulty on Thomas making that play. It just showed up in his stomach, and he had to instantly corral it in order to get two feet in. His reaction time and hand skills were incredible. I feel like the perception out there is that this was an easy play gifted by McCaffrey's choke job...I think it's the opposite.
This. I mentioned this in another thread where this came up.
The Tip was actually something they practiced, and had done in other games before the NFCCG. This was more spontaneous. Mafe tipped the ball at the line, which made it flutter a bit in flight, which made it harder for McC to make a clean catch. When the ball bounced out of his hands, I think Thomas was as surprised as anyone on the field. From the video above, which was pretty much the original TV view, it was almost magical. The action was hidden by the players' bodies.
A different replay showed how the ball bounced around, Drake corralled it fast enough that he got two steps in bounds before he fell out of the field of play. Really put the seal on the game.
