Jeremiah suggested the annual price tag for Darnold with his next contract will exceed $50 million.

“I think he’s heading in that direction,” said Jeremiah. “If [the Seahawks are] going to stick to their guns on their policy and he comes out and has a year that approaches what he did last year, I would say he’s going to land in that ballpark.

“I think he’s also going to get the benefit of who he is as a person. It’s like, ‘OK, I don’t feel super comfortable paying this, but he’s going to allow me to feel a little more comfortable because of who he is and how he’s viewed.’”

If he signs a contract that exceeds $50 million on an average annual basis, Darnold will join a group of 12 quarterbacks already making more than that amount.

-----------

Jeremiah isn’t the only one to have Darnold’s value above $50 million per season.

Spotrac calculated the quarterback’s market value at $52.5 million on an average annual basis. Overall, Spotrac projected Darnold to get a 2-year, $105.96 million deal.

Darnold’s likely to pursue a 3-year contract again as he did last offseason. But if the Seahawks inked Darnold to an extension before his contract expires, then a new 2-year agreement could work.

It’s possible, though, that the longer the Seahawks wait, the more expensive Darnold could become. The quarterback just experienced the best two seasons of his career and led his team to the Super Bowl last year.

--------

Besides Darnold, every quarterback who has won the Super Bowl since 2021 has an average annual pay of at least $45 million. Interestingly, Patrick Mahomes is the cheapest (other than Darnold), but Mahomes’s leads the NFL in total contract value at $450 million (on a 10-year deal).

Darnold isn’t going to get a record-setting years amount in his next contract. But he could receive pay similar to Hurts, who led the Eagles to the Super Bowl a year before Darnold accomplished the feat.

Hurts signed a five-year, $255 million deal with his last extension.

Something tells me Sam is pretty grateful to be here and will, within reason, give a bit of a discount to the Hawks. He knows what a jungle it is out there and just how good he has it. We'll see though. It's going to be interesting to see how he and his agent are to deal with in contract negotiations.

$50M/yr wouldn't even put him in the top 10 in the league. By next year it's going to be at least 55 - 60 with the cap going in the way it is.

I'm praying you're right.

Sam's already experienced the "Getting paid a lot while everything else sucks" point of view.

I think he'd rather keep winning and get a tad less the rest of his career.

(he won't be able to buy 5 cars; only 4. 🙃 )

Sam doesn't negotiate his contract his agent does, who gets paid by how well he negotiates contracts, he is not going to give an appreciation discount unless Sam steps in himself, which tends to be rare.

Hey, let him win another ring, then give him a substantial raise. A good problem to have.
He's about to have yet ANOTHER OC. What's this like his 8th different coordinator? That can't be easy and takes time to adjust.

Just looked it up. About to be his 8th OC. Dayum.

All athlete/agent relationships are different, but one universal fact is agents work for pro athletes, not the other way around. Some guys let their agents do all the negotiating, some don't even have agents and represent themselves, and then there's everyone else in the middle. Most athletes provide a basic structure and guardrails for what they want and how they want their agent to go about getting it. Agents, typically attorneys by trade, give their clients accurate feedback and guidance throughout negotiations as well as perspective on their respective "market" in contract numbers.

While I will not claim to know what Sam's relationship is like with his agents Jimmy Sexton, RJ Gonser, and Jim Denton, I have a feeling he won't be directing them to play Russell Wilson/Mark Rodgers hardball with John Schneider.

It's painfully obvious you have never hired and/or worked with legal representation.

If Darnold has another 4000 yard/30 TD type year, I think both sides will do right by each other. I just don't think there's any world where Darnold chases dollars to go to Miami, Arizona, Cleveland, etc. He's finally found a home. Now I could see a $50 million type contract but of the 2-year variety. $100M/2 years is a lot more palatable than $250M/5 years that end up haunting organizations.

Agreed. Sam is now a hot commodity and will expect to be compensated as so. I'm guessing they hope Milroe grows into a viable option later if negotiations with Sam don't go well.

Agents or Attorney's will look at the market, they get clients based on how they negotiate and how much their clients receive, if they are under performing the market they don't get clients. maybe you should learn about Capitalism, supply and demand, how many Superbowl winning QB's are on the market every year, how many QB's have won the amount of games Darnold has the last couple of years and the projection for this season weighs into him being a QB that dominates three years running, possibly another Superbowl win, sure the Seahawks gave him the opportunity, but so did the Vikings, Jets,49ers,and Panthers, this time he fit the system and we did not have a starter entrenched and it was a balanced system that fit his talents. He grabbed it with both hands and ran with it. As a fan I am glad he was able too, proud of this teams accomplishments and his. But it is a business, if he wins it all again you don't think there would be a market for his talents on the open market?

Don't be naive. Besides he has a family now and a future child to feed :)

$50m would be a discount…and not a small one.
