Have met him around town several times over the years. One of the nicest guys on the planet. He's always around Sammamish and Issaquah. Stops to talk to anyone who approaches him. Genuinely nice guy.

Just heard it announced on 710 ESPN. Rick Rizzs is retiring after 2026 season. Legend. And one hell of a good dude.

Rick and I share the same Alma Mater... Southern Illinois University.

While we were both there during the early/mid-70's, Southern's baseball team was in the College World Series in 1973... along with Minnesota, among other teams.

SIU hosted the game with Minnesota... it would be the only SIU baseball game that I would attend... because of, and only because of Dave Winfield. I wanted to watch him pitch... and hit.

Here's an excerpt from his Wiki page...

Dave Winfield of Minnesota. was the Most Outstanding Player (in the 1973 College World Series). He was the starting pitcher in two games, tossing 17 1/3 innings, allowing nine hits, one earned run, and striking out 29. In addition, Winfield batted .467 in the Series.

Rick was an excellent choice to succeed Dave Neihaus... even though it wasn't immediate IIRC.

He is a very nice guy and its too bad this is his last year. Ran into him on the 200 club level last year like 10 minutes before first pitch and we talked for a good 5 minutes about the team and mostly Cal. I realized it was almost gametime and I said to him don't you need to head into the broadcast booth and he shrugged and said he always has time to talk with the fans and it was his favorite part of the job. We shook hands and parted ways and I will always be thankful for the kindness he showed to me when he clearly needed to get to work. Lol.
