New Prototypes

During the L.O.B years, the Seahawks created new prototypes at multiple positions.
  • CB: Long, lanky, smart CBs. Richard Sherman became a sensation as a taller CB. He was cerebral that allowed him to fit the scheme while masking his physical limitations.
  • SS: Kam Chancellor: He become a 230 lb SS that was able to hit and cover.
  • FS: Earl Thomas. A center fielder with 4.3 speed. True sideline-to-sideline ability.
Well...It's happening again. Mike Macdonald and two players in particular are really breaking the mold and re-creating prototypes.
  • Bryon Murphy II: It's time to put it to bed. Byron can be just as dynamic while playing NT. Let's stop panning for a 330 lb NT. B. Murph is an absolute tank in the middle that allows this defense to flourish. He plays a big role period. He does it while being undersized. It's time to start saying Murphy is quickly ascending to being one of the top NTs in the entire league.
  • Nick Emmanwori: Welcome to the new mold of what a nickel CB is. Dude plays the slot. He plays the SAM. He is everywhere. WEAPON.

The notion of the video's author that the defense is not built to stop the run is inaccurate in my opinion.

Both the Carroll defense and the Macdonald defense thrived, in part, by rotating their defensive line personnel. That's the primary similarity between the two. Very different overall approaches to defense in my opinion.

Nick Emmanwori does remind me of the early range and multiplicity (before health issues) of Kenny Easley.

Thanks for posting the video.

Poona ford is another mold breaking DT that came from Seattle. I’m guilty of wanting a monster in there at DT but Byron Murphy is great. Can’t wait to see if Riley mills turns into a monster.

Nick Emmanwori is more special even than Murphy. He is like a rover he just plays everywhere the ball is going. I don’t know if they have a name for his position… defensive defender?

I disagree to be honest.

Poona wasn't that dynamic as a NT. Murphy has the strength and explosiveness. He is truly redefining what a NT can be. I would argue a dynamic NT is very important in Mac's defense. had it with Pierce in Baltimore. Has it now in Seattle.

Not sure what to call Emman. I know other teams have had similar things. However, no one really has the size and speed of Nick.

I agree Poona is not nearly as good as Murphy. But Poona has definitely outperformed expectations based on his physical characteristics

It was definitely annoying watching him make plays for the rams yesterday and I guess I always rooted for him cause he was an underdog

Sure.

I know he doesn't really fit people's definition of a NT but he was an ideal 1T in the old Carroll defense.
