Could Zabel be one of the most impactful rookies in Hawks history?

Don’t laugh…

I didn’t say best. I didn’t say most talented. I didn’t say even say most valuable.

I’ve been a fan for almost 50 years so I fullly understand how great the Easley’s, Jones’s, Tez’s, Alexander’s, and the like are. They all had a huge impact over the course of their careers.

But I’m talking the actual rookie season compared to the prior. Zabel has quietly set a tone of excellence in transforming this O line. Many of the people who thought Darnold would fail here pointed to our inability to protect a more traditional pocket passer.

It’s only been two years since one of the must humiliating losses in Seahawks history, when the Steelers came in led by Mason Rudolph and bitch slapped us at home. We had years of management telling us what kind of team they wanted to be but never doing anything about it. Always drafting WR’s and RB’s early while talking about the desire to be tough.

Then last year our O line was one of the worst in the league. Even after years of knowing it needed addressed , we had guys like Stone Forsyth, George Fant, Michael Jarrell, Curtis McClendan and Laken Tomlinson starting games.

Now, at more than the halfway point, we are objectively a top three team in the NFL. Yeah the defense is boss, but we are scoring a lot of points as Sam has more time than any of us thought he would have. I think the Zabel selection was the perfect fit at the perfect time that has had as much of an impact on a Seahawks team one year imporovement as pretty much any rook we’ve drafted.

(Russ is probably the obvious number one admittedly)

I guess after years of trying to make mountains out of mole hills, they've come to realize, it's just about impossible and sprung a first. I wouldn't mind them taking another in the 1st ..unless something spectacular supersedes it of course.

I love Zabel and am very happy that the front office didn’t try to get cute with their first round pick. He’s been tremendous.

However, I still believe the most impactful rookie in team history was Russell Wilson. After that Patriots game (Week 6?) it felt like the whole team started to believe in him, the whole area started to rally behind the guy, and they took off.

Zabel's been solid, but the improvement in the O-line may also be the result of Klint Kubiak, John Benton, and the fact that Charles Cross and Abe Lucas are finally healthy again.

Last year's O-line was a mess. Stone Forsythe played in 9 games. Saotoa Laumea started 5 games, and Michael Jerrell started 3 games. Even George Fant started 2 games.

I honestly think at least once a year we should forego our favorite microbrew or elixir of choice and buy a six pack of these in honor of our mighty bison..

It’s the least we could do. Especially if all of us .netters toasted at the same time

Had he been excellent as a rookie, yes! But why do we have to always go to a “best ever” (or “most impactful” ever) conversation every.single.time? That is social media click bait sensationalism. Recency bias makes us vulnerable to this trick. It is entertaining, sure. But no, not most impactful rookie. That would be Russ.

The word “impact” makes me think of Chuck Knox. He would say going into the draft, “we are looking for impact players”. The Seahawks have had plenty.
Curt Warner? His first run from scrimmage went for 62 yards.
Jacob Green?
Kenny Easley?
John L Williams?
Cortez Kennedy?
Walter Jones???!
Shaun Alexander?
Steve Hutchison?
Earl Thomas?

Most impactful? Depends on the year, depends on the guy. These are the first round Seahawks that I see as having been impactful.

Lofa in the middle taking over as an undersized badass, Russ with wheels and without ego, so many rookies but Zabel puts his stamp on this line and that’s all that’s needed not being the best, just a stabilizing force and attitude.
