accidentally took some acorn squash down to Az to a friends place. He has chix and a wife. Asked if they wanted the acorn squash and they said the chix will eat it up. They take old eggshells out and use that for laying mash for the shells. I did not know they could do that. I learned sumthin.

Generally, you want to avoid feeding your birds their shells or raw eggs. Once they eat their own, there’s no purpose in having them around.

I lived in Anchorage for several years. Never ate the bear meat (too many parasites) but would drop it off at a shelter.

Fish and Game in AK does a phenomenal job of managing populations.

I enjoyed hunting and fishing there. But the most breathtaking part of it was the landscape. My best hunting trip is one where we came back empty handed. It was at the foot on Denali and about 8 miles from where Christoper McCandless’ met his demise. The bus was still there.

Everyone and I mean everyone has hunting in their DNA. While I love my guns, tinkering with them and hitting the range, hunting when you’re not the alpha was an exhilarating experience. Those that ‘kill for thrill’ don’t represent the majority. At least, I like to think that’s not the motivation behind it. Hopeful naivety.

I haven’t been out since I left Alaska. Still hit the range…still preparing for the zombie apocalypse.

Alaskans very much believe in a culture of subsistence, meaning not wasting wild food in particular. When their state troopers encounter a moose vs truck collision, the carcass is sent directly to a processor for the needy. Between the roadkill factor and that of lower 48 hunters wanting to donate 600 pounds of a meat they killed but won’t eat, social service populations eat fresher meat than any of their peers in the lower 48.

I’ve eaten Bear meat many times.
Black and Brown/Grizzly.

Every bit was handled and processed appropriately.

I’ve eaten steaks and roasts, I’ve eaten it fried, stewed, and braised.
I’ve had sausage made from bear meat.

Not once can I say that it tasted good or that I enjoyed it.

Eating bear meat to survive sure, eating it for taste and enjoyment, not so much.

YMMV

What exactly was bad about it as compared to venison or wild boar?

Just saw on nfl network that Wentz is out for the season. Hes having shoulder surgery.

Way to go, koc, leaving your backup qb writhing and twitching out there after innumerable hits so you could keep your healthy qb3 Max Brosmer virginal as to any nfl experience. Brosmer’s now your permanent qb2 unless you trade or poach for a veteran option that will be worse than Wentz.

Needs to eat more bear meat.

FTR - yeah bear meat in any form is not a tasty treat.

Plus the possibility of Trichinosis or Brucellosis.
