We are on CBS this week. They only get one game per market so we are not going to see much coverage.

Our crew is Andrew Catalon, Charles Davis, & Jason McCourty

IMG 9435

Red - Bengals @ Vikings
Purple - Steelers @ Patriots
Orange - Texans @ Jaguars
Lt Blue - Colts @ Titans
Green - Broncos @ Chargers (Late)

I find it weird that they're broadcasting us to the Saints divisional rivals, but they're broadcasting Bengals-Vikings to SF and Phoenix.

I’ve found that often when a team plays a. Morning game in their market the network with one game will avoid putting anything opposite that time and select from the later games for better ratings.

Yup. It's all about the Benjamins.

This is going to sound dumb, but whenever I think of Louisiana, I forget how far east they are, and I've been there a couple times! I always forget how far east Texas goes. Such a big country. If not for the heat and humidity, I could live in NO. Great city.

Interesting the donks/bolts game in some parts of the east coast (DC, Baltimore, Philly). I would’ve thought Pats/Stealers would take those areas.

Those markets probably have a home early game on FOX. That limits what CBS can show as they can then only show a late game. The rules are so antiquated.

I don’t know that the rules prohibit them showing a game opposite a home market game but it would be crazy to do that if you have another option. Most fans in a home area will choose that game so ratings will improve for a later game and as we all know the mighty dollar usually wins out.

There are some very Byzantine rules around what can be shown opposite a home game in tv coverage. It varies by market also (NY/LA with multiple teams have some different rules). This is why I love Sunday Ticket. Watch whatever I want to wherever I am.

Some excerpts:

  • If a local franchise is playing at home, and the broadcast is part of a doubleheader, the other network (which shows the single game) may only show a game in the opposite time slot;
  • If a local franchise is playing at home, and the broadcast is shown by the network carrying only one game, the other network (which shows the doubleheader) may only show a game in the opposite time slot, with the doubleheader effectively cancelled in that affected market;
  • If a local franchise is playing an away game, and the broadcast is shown by the network on which it is the only NFL game airing that week, the other network (which shows the doubleheader) may air both of their games
  • If a local franchise is playing on the road on the network carrying a doubleheader, the other network can air its single game in the same timeslot opposite the local franchise's game. However, affiliates in the local franchise's primary market almost always opt against it because such an action usually ensures low ratings. The "no opposing game" policy is a key reason why single game fixtures on the East Coast are occasionally scheduled for the late time slot.

It’s kind of crazy that the home market is basically unaffected by an away game. You’d think that fans couldn’t go in person so you’d make sure there was nothing else on at that time for away games. I guess they just assume ratings for away games will be good either way.
