Just unlucky. Didn't help that dude jumped on him when he may have had a broken neck... And why is that a fumble? As soon as the defensive player touched him, he was down.

Why try and catch that, just call the fair catch and let it bounce. I get tracking the ball, but some spatial awareness would go a long way too. Just an unlucky situation honestly.

all much much better replay of it. thanks for sharing this. I was wrong on how it unfolded, however... still pissed that the GB player dove down on him to dislodge a ball when he was already down and the officials gave gb the ball lol

also as a comment in that reddit post quotes the rules:

Item 1. Contact with Receiver. It is interference if a player of the kicking team contacts the receiver, or causes a passive player of either team to contact the receiver, before or simultaneous to the receiver touching the ball. It is not a foul if a kicking team player is blocked into the receiver or the contact is the result of a foul.
Item 2. Right of Way. A receiver who is moving toward a kicked ball that is in flight has the right of way. If opponents obstruct his path to the ball, or cause a passive player of either team to obstruct his path, it is interference, even if there is no contact, or if he catches the ball in spite of the interference, and regardless of whether any signal was given.
https://operations.nfl.com/the-rules/nfl-rulebook/#rule10

Pushing another player into the player who called for a fair catch is catch interference and is a foul. And further, they cannot be tackled or hit once they catch it (which when he was on the ground, he was hit).
So even if the first part wasn’t a foul, since it was one of the “blocking” situations, the second part CERTAINLY is.
Edit:
If a receiver has made a fair catch, an opponent is prohibited from unnecessarily contacting or tackling him, or causing a passive player of either team to unnecessarily contact him. Incidental contact is not a foul.

So the officials completely botched that entire thing.

I may be new here but I kind of gather that Bobo isn't this team's normal punt returner, right?
Think they planned to use Kenny Mac here until he got hurt. Horton might be the second choice, and Bobo was their 3rd option?

Why did they get the ball? he was clearly down.
Preseason homer reffing. Weird, an automatic turnover review would have shown that.
MikeMac elected not to throw the challenge flag, maybe he wanted to see how defensive players would react, for player evaluation purposes.

Good point. There were a few calls for the home team that seemed suspect to me. Fairly obvious ones. Not complaining but just as pointed out here with what looks like pretty good video evidence. Just for example of others, there was a deep pass where the GBay CB had the receiver right arm locked. No call.

It's not an issue of playing scared or not.

It's an issue of a head coach being smart enough not to put KEY PLAYERS in positions they don't belong in.
Are you saying Mac isn't smart enough? I would simply disagree with you on that comment alone without need to defend the decision.

Not throwing shade at you. I know you contribute goods comments. Just disagree with this in general. The other points made in this thread are good reasons why.

Well first of all, assuming that I said "Mac isn't smart enough" is assuming too much.

Smart head coaches do make mistakes sometimes.

They're not infallible.

Anyway, I just learned that Kenny would've been the one returning punts if he never got hurt and I think Horton was next on that list with Bobo being 3rd. (if that was the plan/pecking order all along then so be it.)

It was just bad luck that this happened and now the only thing we can do is hope he comes back ready to go for Game 1 or 2 should we need him.
