In 2008, the Seahawks made the odd choice to keep two kickers on the regular season roster. Kickers Brandon Coutu and Olindo Mare both made the 53 man roster. Coutu was inactive all 16 games. Coutu and Mare both remained on the team through camp in 2009 but Coutu was cut so that Mare could be Jim Mora's designated whipping boy in his sole season as head coach.
One bright spot in training camp in 2009 was Michael Bennett, who was signed as an undrafted free agent and made a big splash in pre-season games. He made the roster but was inactive for the first four games that year. He was waived after week 4 so the team could re-sign .... wait for it... FB Justin Grifffith, who had been cut just before week 4 so the Seahawks could elevate T Kyle Williams from the practice squad. If the NFL had the current PS elevation rules, Bennett may have never been waived!
Bennett was claimed off waivers by Tampa Bay and developed into a really good DE, and we fortunately signed him back to the Seahawks in 2013 in time for him to make history in Seattle.
Sometimes the legend is more interesting than the truth and I supposed this site was part of the mis-information machine. Somehow the story evolved that Brandon Coutu and Michael Bennett have some intersection in their odd career trajectories, but really that's not at all true. Coutu was on the roster in 2008 and Bennett in 2009.
Thank you for your attention to this very important matter.
