Word is he has taken over (for now) the starting center position from Olu Oluwatimi. His friendship/chemistry with Zabel must have shown itself in practice. It was slim pickings in free agency for the center position, and the draft wasn't much better. Hopefully he can be another solid UDFA pickup by JS.

Sundell was a good college player with OLine positional flexibility. As we know he was a UDFA last season but played quite a few snaps in relief of OLu and the guy that quit last season.

Even last year the coaches were speaking favourably about his play then and he does know and has played alongside Zabel. He demonstrably physically stronger than Olu who seems to be missing that special sauce it seems.

To me it appears Sundell has more ‘want it’ in his game than Olu. Playing C in the NFL is not an easy job to do well, and Olu, who I must confess I was excited about when he was drafted, just seems to be missing something.

It was initially reported Olu wasn’t considered strong enough by the staff, but it seems to be more than that and he’s been underwhelming even though he was a Rimmington Award winner as the best C in college.

Sundell wants the starters job so Olu will need to ‘want it’ more.

Our OL shall be excellent this year, the floor will be top 10 or at least top 15, finally living up to the expectation of being a pure Schneider-built line.

Olu was a 5th round pick, he was never seen as a sure thing. And yet, he played well enough last year when he became the starter. Olu was ranked 19th among starting centers by PFF last year, so I don't think you can say there was a failure in scouting here.

Even if Sundell beats him out as the starter, Olu is still valuable as a competent backup, or possibly trading material.

This isn't necessarily true. In Olu's case he was considered by many to be the best C in college and won the prestigious Rimmington award. He just hasn't proved out to be better than others who 'want it' more.

Feel free to assign blame if you wish but Olu getting beat out is more about how much he actually wants the starters job.

I’ve been beyond impressed with Sundell. Heard a good Viens pod recently about him. There is a clear relationship with Zabel that matters. The athleticism and want to give him the edge in this system.
