Will Steelers want Wilson back?

Do you think Wilson will be a Steelers ,in 2025?

On one hand, Wilson's backup Field is going to Seahawks, isn't he? And the 2025 QB class is weak, as a playoff team their draft position isn't great.

On the other hand, Wilson played like a journeyman this season, make that a high-end journeyman, but still. He will cost more to sign, he will probably want Geno kinda of $$$.

And Bo Nix leading the Donks to the playoffs under the same coach and system that Russ floundered in in Denver just adds to the evidence that the dude is washed.

And Nix thriving comes on the heals of Geno doing the same in Seattle.

Russ has moved on from two failed stints in 3 years and had his replacements do well. Why would anyone pay him to start?

Russell Wilson = an improv version of Ryan Fitzpatrick at this point in his career. Capable of s spectacular game every month or so, but often just average with no upside.

There is no debate in Pittsburgh as to whether a different OC can get more from him, or whether better blocking would help or more weapons would open up their offensr for him. He himself is the regulating factor.

It is really funny if you look at the Steeler fans comments on RW. They're saying the same exact things Bronco and Seahawk fans were saying. The offense looks exactly like the Schottenheimer era passing game under Wilson.

RW can win you games, but he's a game manager at this point. Put him on a Greg Roman style, run heavy team with lots of play action and he can do some damage. Ask him to do any more than that and things start falling apart.

This is why Sean Payton hated RW. You lose access to the entire short and intermediate middle of the field, you lose access to timing routes that aren't intermediate or long. His short passing game accuracy and timing is off as well.

A RW lead offense is one that is inherently limited and handicapped. The moment his arm starts going is the moment he's out of the NFL. His deep ball accuracy is really the only reason he is starting over Fields right now.

Looking at how a rookie vs. a 10 plus year veteran ran Sean Payton's system is really telling.

I thought he looked pretty good, and he sure didn't get a lot of help from his receivers. If Pickett, Austin, and Freiermuth catch the ball they win that game.

I'm sure it'll be contract dependent, but Russ's Achilles' Heel the last several seasons is keeping drives moving on his own. He's once again got one of the league's worst success rates. He just produces too many plays that don't move the sticks (particularly sacks).

He looked better at it early this year, but it seemed too much was riding on Pickens making amazing catches, which I didn't think was sustainable and ultimately hasn't been.

I see a lot of people still seemingly judging Field on his performance in Chicago. Throw that out and judge him on his first 6 games this year with Pitt. He went 4 for 6. Stands to reason he may have improved since then. If he can reproduce that you're looking t at least 12 wins over the season, maybe more. That kind of record figures to give you a shot at playing in THE game. I would welcome the chance to have Fields in Seattle so long as it doesn't cost us what has brought about our rebirth this year. We sure as hell aren't likely to draft anything on Fields level this year.

One of the issues with Fields is his deep game is practically non existent. It's why Russell Wilson was put in over Fields, he can stretch the field and really exploit the play action passes. Wilson was making much more difficult throws and it shows in advanced stats. His Y/A was way higher than Fields, Wilson's air yards per completion (how long the pass traveled in the air) was way higher than anything Fields did too.

Wilson was really better in virtually every metric as a passer. Fields is not the answer to our QB issue and he'd be a downgrade from Geno Smith. Fields did a lot of short dinking and dunking and taking off. Fields on a team that struggles to run the ball is a recipe for disaster.

I did not like Fields when we seahawk fans went to the Ohio State vs Maryland game. He seemed unable to do the game right. Hard no on him. I know Ohio State is a premiere program, but they did not work that well this time.

Tom Brady and Brees have said similar things in the past as well. Avoiding sacks is mostly about presnap reads and also quick release once the ball is hiked.

For the Steelers I think Arthur Smith wants to continue to build up the Steelers run game as a priority first. But there is no reason to go back to Wilson or Fields if they want to improve the passing offense in all honesty.
