I've found in my career that whenever someone leads with "it's a business"...I start looking for a new job.

Just human nature that I prefer to be treated like a human being and not a number on a spreadsheet.
You'll often see the best in any field do the same, leaving the scared and untalented behind.

Is this the best plan for the Seahawks?
To that I'd say apples and oranges. The NFL forces this mindset with the salary cap. If it's like a family, then Lockett should take a pay cut to match his production. Some players do this, but it's the exception. Can't expect a team to have the family mindset when players have agents getting the most they can, and vis versa

I used to admire the old 49ers through the Montana years. They knew when to move on from aging stars and keep the machine rolling. It is part of the game.

Coach Bill Walsh famously said he would trade aging stars a year or two too early, rather than a year or two too late. For youngster here, coach Walsh has 3 rings, and his successor coach Seifert has 1 ring using mostly Walsh's roster.

49ers traded Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Ronnie Lott etc etc when those stars still could play, but none of them played more than 4 years after being traded. A championship football team is not a retirement home, or a temple.

His books:
1734971094130 1734971185598

Lockett should have been traded 2 years ago, I advocated it back then, and I stand by that suggestion.

I think everyone in the world knows Tyler is not getting the money he is due next year. His contract was always structured to be back loaded with a thank you for your service and a clear out.

Question will be 1) how much does he want to fight for staying on the team as a rarely used WR3 2) how does JS value his role financially 3) does he simply retire off into the real estate sunset. He's talked a lot about not wanting to leave the NFL as a potato, now with a kid I could see him hanging it up.

Definitely a guy who should have his jersey in the rafters. Some incredible moments from him and Russ over the years.

It was much easier before the salary cap. The decisions to trade away established players were easier to make with unlimited players' spending.

After 14 seasons with SF, Montana was traded to KC in 1993.

The salary cap was introduced in 1994.

Tyler is still good, but there is only so many yards an aging #3 WR is going to get on a team with a very limited time-to-pressure rate. Very rarely is he going to be the primary read on a route, he's very rarely going to be the release valve on most routes, he's the "I'll get to you if I have time and the first two guys are covered" route. (Spoiler Alert: We basically never have time.)

And, yeah, as amazing as Tyler has been for us (ROH inductee for sure), he definitely has the contract of a #1 or #2 receiver for next year... and those days are done. Could he restructure, take a contract more in line with his reduced role and production? Sure, but if I were a betting man, I'd put it on Lockett retiring this offseason.

Going to miss seeing #16 out there when the time finally comes, though.

True!! But the principle of trading when there's value remains.

I think the collapse of Tyler further illustrates the Geno tends to go to his 1st or 2nd option. Tyler isn’t going to sell out his body at the end of his career for a middle of the road non playoff team.

Exactly! IMHO it's time to move on from him unless he takes a massive pay cut or a production oriented pay plan. He appears to be a good leader and mentor, but has to produce or get out of the way others development.

When I suggested or advocated trading Lockett 2 or was it 3 seasons ago, some 12s called me names. Lockett was ready to live after football, he has been for the last 2 seasons.

Should have traded Lockett, we might have gotten a third, if not a second at the time.
I wasn't one of those,
I think he's been done for more than two years and wanted max for him
back then but Pete loved hanging on to his favorite's.

A lot of these "should have traded him when we could" comments assume there was a trade market for Lockett within the past two or three years.

Source?

There's always a market for a receiver who achieved 1000 yards for years. But Lockett was getting on age so a third might be a bit high, but who knows?

Once they got JSN, his days were numbered.

I don't think Lockett is a detriment to the team, I mean who is he keeping playing time from that we really care about. The only thing with him is his high cap hit. But I have no doubt that this season will be the end of it. That's the easiest move they have in the offseason to gain significant cap space. No brainer. I don't know why anybody would be upset about it right now.

Lockett is NOT a detriment to the team, not at all!! My point was a pick, say a 3rd rounder, and the cap relief (if any) would have helped the team more. Arguably, JSN might have developed at a more rapid pace with Lockett's snaps.

No, I wasn't directing that comment at you, just in general, my opinion. I was also thinking of what they might have got for him, even as recently as the last trade deadline. And I love the guy, true Seahawk and all that, but it's always about making the team better. I get it.

I suspect he retires at the end of the year. He has nothing left to prove and he has a pretty successful real estate gig now.
