The 9ers are going to keep Jimmy, maybe?

I'm thinking he stays if the 9ers can convince him to take a pay cut, but still be one of the highest paid backups.

Word out of Ninerville is they are nervous about the kid, and would like a little insurance.

Jimmy should've been cut months ago if they were truly looking to move on.

Jimmy G hasn’t attended qb meetings nor does he train with the qbs. He’s even said he hasnt met the qb coach.

If this is the 9ers high priced insurance, they’re sure not acting like it

After screwing him over all offseason it’s doubtful Jimmy wants to stay there and play for an ungrateful fan base and management. Jimmy deserves a better team. Imagine being highly productive at work and getting fired….Then after getting a new job that pays better your old boss calls and begs you to come back. Nobody wants to work for a bunch of assholes

Especially when you are financially secured.

Jimmy G is a backup at this point. He hasn't had a proper off-season. He's not going to be able to walk on to any team and be the starter. He'd be behind on any team he joined.

But he knows Shanny's offense, and his teammates like him. And the 9ers can offer him more money than what any other team would pay at this point. It's too late for Jimmy, all the teams already have their starters.

I'd imagine the niners know Hawks will grab him and they most definitely will release Jimmy but a smart strategy would be to hold him to see if another team gets desperate or Hawks lose out of contention first several games. Just a thought.

I agree completely.

It looks to me like they're not not holding on to him as insurance. I think they're holding on to him in hopes of getting something in return for him.

I qualified the crap out of those last two statements. What's nice is that we'll know for sure very soon. Related to this, while it wouldn't have changed my conclusions back when people around here were talking about Baker Mayfield and Jimmy Garoppolo, I think I said something incorrect about Garoppolo and his salary and cap hit this season.

I believe a "vested-veteran" like Garoppolo has his salary for this season fully guaranteed if he's on the roster for the team's first game of the season. So if the Gold Diggers neither trade nor cut Garoppolo by their first game, they're on the hook for his full $24.2M 2022 salary and at that point, they'd almost certainly hang on to him as their "insurance policy."

In those older threads, I had said that Garoppolo had greatly reduced risk for a team because his salary for 2022 wasn't guaranteed, so I thought a team could adopt a "pay-as-you-go" approach, and have the cash and cap commitment of $1.42M per regular-season game, with the freedom to cut him at any point without further cash or cap problems. I now believe that was incorrect, and that if Garoppolo is with an NFL team for that team's first 2022 regular-season game, then that team is on the hook, in terms of both cash and cap, for Garoppolo's full $24.2M salary.

I still think it's more likely the Gold Diggers will cut Garoppolo, but I wouldn't be shocked if they didn't and ended up keeping him. And of course, he could still be traded later if some team loses its starter and thinks Garoppolo might be enough to help it get to the Super Bowl this year.

Jed York piped up to the media saying that keeping Jimmy past week 1 was “on the table.” This is notable, because Jed has usually kept his nose out of kyle and johns thinking since they came on.

I as well as some media pundits are wondering if this is all about not getting beat week 2.

He's considered to be the Niners 4th QB right now. I heard he doesnt even have a copy of the playbook.

I'm not necessarily saying he's the answer for us, but I think it's pretty obvious he's done in SF.

So strange that he would even sign that deal. But at the same time, the Niners are going to be a very good team. So, not a bad gig.
It has a no trade and no tag clause.

Unreal. Link:

I can only attribute this to two things. Either kyle and John think this kid might need training wheels, or it is Jed York’s pathological hate for Seattle.

I'm surprised.

I mean there was a part of me that was like "hey, maybe we can keep Jimmy this year on reduced contract" but I always thought he wouldn't take that deal and would rather jump to another team.

For 49ers...this is really best thing that could have happened.

Scenarios:

1) He sits all year as the backup and salary is reduced from 27 to 6.5 mil. Its really only an extra 4.5 as he'd have had 2 mil cap hit on release. They get good backup AND they now can get comp pick when he signs elsewhere next season.

2) Lance struggles or gets hurt in which case they get Jimmy again at reduced price (27 mil down to max of 16)...and they again get the comp pick when he leaves next year.

3) He gets traded in season. He has no trade but that pretty much gives him control of where he'd go as he can waive it. He also becomes more attractive to other teams as his cap number has been reduced.

In all cases 49ers get cap relief this year as his bonuses would hit NEXT year. In the end 49ers likely get SOMETHING for him next year be it a pick in trade or a comp pick the following year.

To me, its win-win-win for the 49ers.

This was the worst-kept secret in the NFL after the draft. At that point, the 49ers knew they would keep him unless they got a massive offer. Other NFL teams knew Lance needed more time and were not willing to give the 9ers that offer.

ehh....don't agree.

Lance is still the starter and he'll have a pretty long leash. 49ers get Jimmy back at HUGE discount AND guarantee they get a return...be it in season trade or a comp pick when he signs elsewhere next year.

Additionally, the comp pick (likely a 3) sets the floor on trade value. They have no reason to give him up now for less than a 3rd round pick.

My guess is he gets traded before the deadline and teams are more interested with his reduced contract.
