Should Dave Krieg be in the HOF?

He was one of the best QBs of the 1980s. However, since his retirement, his numbers do not look as impressive.

I see it as a two-part question. Should he? Yes. Will he? no.

Love mudbone. He was top 5 to 10 in multiple categories when he hung them up ( including fumbles and impossible plays) but just wasn't consistently outstanding enough to warrant HOF consideration. If they ever were to create a NFL Hall of 'Great', he would be first ballot.

You have to compare to his era

23rd in passing yards, 18th in TD's.

I mean, those aren't bad numbers if you're making an argument. Certainly are a LOT of Hall of Fame QB's below Krieg that have less yards and TD's.

Unfortunately he played here with very little national exposure and playoff/SB success. Doesn't help Krieg's case.

Krieg to Largent were some of my favorite memories growing up. Games against the donks was the best entertainment in the NFL for a few years. For die hard hawk fans of the time, emotions say he should be in. Some would argue that his fumblitis should keep him out, but Farve & Moon have more. Ultimately, his dramatic inconsistency is why he won't (and probably shouldn't) get in.

Ring of Honor YES, HOF, well, that's a close one.

It's certainly possible to make a passable case for him, over some of the stiffs that are in there and shouldn't be. Without looking, I'd say look at his W/L record against Elway and Fouts, two HOF contemporaries. I wouldn't be surprised if Krieg had a winning record vs. Fouts, pretty sure a losing record vs. Elway, but maybe not bad. Anyone got those numbers?

Krieg DOES get some love here:

But if I understand correctly, he'd need 80% of the selectors, not just 55% of the faux-selectors who've voted on this site. Still interesting to look at.

Dave Krieg should absolutely be in the SPORTS UNDERDOG OVERACHIEVERS HOF if there were such a thing. In there with Billy Mills, the 1980 USA Hockey team, Rulon Gardner, Kurt Warner, Nick Foles, and others. You could make a good "case" for that HOF for Case Keenum off the Vikings walkoff win over the Saints a couple years ago. Krieg was the ultimate underdog in so many ways. Small school, way-less-than-ideal measurables, Krieg even getting ONE NFL snap was an Absolute Freakin Miracle, never mind being considered for HOF. If the odds overcome to be in the position of even being considered were taken into account, Krieg would be a first-ballot HOFer.

It's also possible to make a HOF case for Krieg based on his amazing longevity in the NFL, how he kept popping up as a starting QB, years, years, past his prime, on a different team each year, seemingly.

Krieg's best moments, Krieg-to-Largent for 40ish yards to the Mia 2 yard line in the playoffs, AFTER throwing a pick that nearly gave Miami the game. Other best moments I recall: Throwing that last-play TD to Paul Skansi after being sacked 7 times by Derrick Thomas in the same game, after slipping out of what would-have-been Thomas's 8th sack of the game. Another memorable moment: 80 yards, 1st play, to Daryl Turner, in Denver, and beating Elway and the Broncos in Mile High stadium. Beating Fouts and the Air Coryell SD Chargers in Jack Murphy after trailing 10-0, with Krieg out-Foutsing Fouts.

I guess it goes back to the HOF criteria are. Oops. There's not really a list of criteria. It's a discussion among the selection panel.

Loved Krieg but imo Ricky Waters is the most deserving former Hawk that should be in the HOF.

Yes. He took a young team and brought them to relevance. That alone was an accomplishment. He gave other AFC teams the fits and influenced the playoff seeding for many years.

Moreso than Shaun Alexander? Alexander has a league MVP and at one time held the Season TD record. Watters has a SB ring and some longevity but at his best was never the best back in the league.

1000 more yards and 22 less TD's than Alexander.

TBH Jacob Green is probably the best Hawk not in the HOF.

And Alexander is the only player in NFL history with 100+ TDs not in the Hall of Fame.

As for the question on Krieg, I love him, but no way. And I don't even think it's close.

Love the Hawks and Krieg, but,,,,,,,no. Nothing more than an average QB in my opinion.

He was the original Tony Romo. Lots of stats, but would find a way to lose when it matters.

OF they made the playoffs in 86 they were good enough to win the Superbowl. They actually beat both Superbowl teams that year. IF that would have happened Krieg in the HOF would be a possibility.

Hard no on that. He wasn't that great for an 80s quarterback, even with his longevity. He only started all the games in like four full seasons. He has 199 career INTs and 153 fumbles to his 261 TDs. They turned it over a lot back in the day, but that dude was not good even by 80s standards on that.

Three Pro Bowls, that's it. I love the dude from my childhood, but you'd be near arguing for Matt Hasselbeck to be in the HOF when you get down to Krieg.

Unfortunately no.....

Of course he is loads better than Joe Namath who was absolute trash except for his guarantee.

No if it was the fumble hall of fame .... :D

Oh boy, the memory of Krieg. Looked like a HOFer one game, and the very next week had me swearing at the TV. He was the definition of hot and cold. He had an incredible year when Warner got shelved game 1 of the season, only overshadowed by Dan Marino.
He should get a lot of credit for his ability to have such a long productive career, doing an admirable job for a few teams. Seemed like whatever team he played for(Sea, KC, Detroit...) he always had them in playoff contention.

However, I'll never forgive him for breaking my heart and taking Jim Zorn's job.

However, I'll never forgive him for breaking my heart and taking Jim Zorn's job.

Zorn was my first childhood sports hero.
I got a guy here in Brazil with a special printer who could make coffee mugs to make me two Zorn mugs (I couldn't decide between two pics of Zorn). I still have the autographed picture Zorn sent me back in the '70s, in the same frame I bought for it back then. I had a numberless royal-blue Seahawks jersey when I was a kid, and when it was given to me, a kit for putting numbers on the jersey was also given to me. I never had any doubt that it would get the number 10, and I was pretty sure I was going to put "ZORN" across the top of the back. It never bothered me that Zorn was left-handed and I was right-handed. All that mattered was that I was the QB on offense in neighborhood football games, I was a Seahawks fan, and Zorn was the Seahawks' QB.
I have a Zorn throwback jersey, and I wore it when I finally got to a Seahawks home game in 2019 after more than 43 years of being a Seahawks fan.
I love Zorn.

But I never resented Krieg for taking over as the Seahawks' starting QB. It was clear to me that he was better, so I just rolled with it. But I never stopped liking Zorn, as what I wrote above shows.

One of the highlights of my sports-fan life happened when my dad took me down to Foxborough to see a Seahawks game in 1984 (he took me in '86 too). 1984 was the season Hotchy mentioned. Curt Warner was featured in the game program, but he didn't play because he was already out for the season with his big knee injury (and I guess there hadn't been enough time to change the content of the game program).
So yes, I "got to" see Franco Harris playing badly for the Seahawks, and that was unpleasant. The Seahawks lost that game too.
The big highlight for me was after the game, when my dad and I waited near the team buses so I could ask players for autographs. Zorn was still with the team as Krieg's backup, and I got to tell him to his face that I had had his autographed picture hanging on the wall of my room in Kennebunk, Maine since the 1970s. I can't for the life of me remember exactly what he said, but it was something to the effect of "all right" or "right on" or something. What I do remember is how sincerely enthusiastic his response seemed, and the expression on his face as he replied. I got to tell my first childhood sports hero to his face that he was important to me, and his response told me that it made him feel good to hear it. Honestly, I think that moment slightly beats XLVIII as the greatest moment for me in over 45 years of being a Seahawks fan.

ObKrieg: I have Krieg as the Seahawks' second-best QB ever (Wilson waaaaay ahead of the pack in first place), and he was involved in a bad way in both the play featured in my avatar image here and the play 14 weeks earlier that set the stage for it. Krieg didn't "look off" Harden in the play in which that dirty cheater knocked out Largent, and 14 weeks later, Krieg threw the interception that led to Largent getting his revenge [that's a link - click it!] in a totally clean and within-the-rules, yet still spectacular, way.
