Old news, now what's fun to know is that Kaepernick has "girlie" hands for a man 6'5"...put that in your pipe and smoke it.....a couple big things looked at when evaluating quarterbacks for NFL competition. ..hand size and accuracy. His hands are larger than any quarterback that came out in 2012-13 and likely in the top 5% in NFL entirely, why do you think he throws such a beautiful deep ball in any conditions? Personally I would like to know Jim Kelly's hand size given the major reason Buffalo drafted EJ Manuel was his hand size.

Thats almost Sonny Liston status. Actually, its probably not even close. Sonny Liston was just ridiculous physically.
For those who don't know ancient boxing history, he was 6'1"-6'2" tall with 7' arms. 15" hands.

Russell Wilson is blessed to have such large hands. I can imagine that it does play a role in his skill in a quarterback... but I don't take measurements like these to heart anyway. Rocky Mariano's arms were as short as Sonny Liston's arms were long, yet he was the only undefeated champion in history, and an all time great. Even if Russell had small hands, he'd still find a way to rule the NFL world. Luckily, in this department, his genetics have given him a helping hand. 8)

15 inch hands? At his height? That has to be typo? If not that's beyond freakish, that's unique. And yes hand size is both a serious advantage and factor in how well a quarterback "spins" the ball deep with accuracy and more importantly in "weather" separate from pure arm strength. For example both Wilson and RG3 have larger hands than Luck. Both are more accurate and throw in weather not a dome.

I've read it in multiple places. Sonny Liston was insanely freakish. Like, once in every few centuries freakish. He has the largest ratio ever recorded of wingspan to height, wingspan being ~115% of his height.
He could probably touch his knees with his arms flat at his sides, standing straight up. I gotta find some pictures, because I've read more than I've seen.

EDIT: Here's a quick article reference http://articles.chicagotribune.com/1987 ... netic-code

I don't think you're lying my foster father was a Golden Gloves boxer so I know boxing pretty well and knew Liston was a bad dude. Just didn't know his physical measurements.

Hand size IS important, though it's only one aspect. Mark Sanchez has even bigger hands than Russell (10.5") but he still has been a fumble machine at times, in part because he relies too much on his big hands and doesn't adequately protect the ball.

Russell so far is doing a much better job at ball protection.

This is the one thing that gets me about the whole "You can succeed, even if you're not tall enough." It's supposed to inspirational...but lets be honest...having giant hands like that is a HUGE benefit. If he had normal size hands, I doubt he'd be playing football at this level to be honest.

Sonny Liston had 15" fists... not "hands"... not the same thing.
There was nothing unofficial about the size of Sonny Liston`s hands, which were so big he had to have boxing gloves specially made. Liston`s fists measured 15 inches and were the largest of any heavyweight champion. Primo Carnera came close at 14 inches, but he stood 6-5. Liston was 6-1.

I think the large hands thing helps in the area of avoiding fumbles but RW's greatest asset in his passing game mechanically is his over the top delivery of the ball. It comes out from his body at the same elevation of a 6'3"/6'4" QB.

I read a theory that one of the biggest reasons taller QBs succeed more often is their hands are larger then shorter QBS especially when they are young. When they are young they are the only kids with hands big enough to grip the ball so they gain that much valuable experience in their younger years. It is not surprising that Wilson has extraordinarily big hands.

I was changing planes at Sea-Tac the day after OT's ended and RW was waiting for an Alaskan Air flight next to mine. He was escorted in by a security guard and sat down under a pillar in an attempt not to be noticed which will never happen in Seattle. A few things I noticed:

1. His wife is much better looking in person.
2. His forearms are massive and in general he has a thick muscular build.
3. Could not see his whole hand but his fists were huge at least twice the area of one of my fists (5'11" 190).

Interesting theory.

I think there is more than one measurement of hands that is in use and this may be confusing the issue. One measure I've read about is with the hand spread wide you measure the distance from little finger tip to thumb tip across the hand. The other method I've heard is measuring from base of the palm to end of fingertips. These methods probably produce different measurements making comparisons difficult.
