Anyone care to speculate?

Was Dremont Jones a Pete must have and Schneider just obeyed? or a Schneider recommendation that Pete just OKed it? Let's understand that both Pete and John signed off on Jones, but who initiated it?
Does it really matter where the impetus for his acquisition came from?

It’d be likely there was agreement between Pn’J to add this player who was ineffectively used by a largely incompetent DC. The results so far seem to indicate he was not a good fit and was significantly overpaid.

Jones will need to significantly step up his game this season and is only still around b/c of the significant dead cap hit if he was to be cut. If he doesn’t step up he’ll be unloaded like many other expensive FA mistakes.

Time will tell but he could be an interesting unusual fit at OLB/DE or not.

Despite his PFF numbers, Dre'mont Jones did have a good (but not great) year in 2022 with the Broncos, with 6.5 sacks and 9 tackles for a loss. (With the Seahawks in 2023, those numbers were down slightly to 4.5 sacks and 5 TFLs.) It could be that his slightly better performance in 2022 was the result of playing on a pretty good Broncos' defense.

Jones can be a solid contributor and as a player who can line up at different positions, be a good piece in the Macdonald defense. But he's not worth $17 million a year, and that money would have been better spent elsewhere.

Pete wanted more pass rush and wanted a guy who could move in and out. John overpaid the guy in the FA class who fit the bill.

That Broncos 2022 defense was super bowl caliber and Evero was the DC. But D. Jones as an important piece of generating pressures. Mac is salivating at all the talent he has to work with in the front even along with D. Jones.

Finding players that can generate pressure on the inside are treated like gold and D. Jones is exactly what Mac is looking for. With a creative DC Jones might be worth the price tag.

But that is why we will watch the season unfold and see how it all progresses.

Listening to a Moyer on with Bob and Dave podcast, and Moyer said Dremont was being played out of position for his size/weight.
Paul believes Dremont will do well on the outside.

When we first signed Jones, Mark Schlereth said Dremont will be a very good defensive player, and possibly make the Pro Bowl.

So Schlereth and Moyer like the guy.

Now that he doesn't have Clint Hurtt putting him in the worst possible position to succeed, he might have a chance to show what he's really capable of.

Personally, I don't understand why everyone is so down on him. Based on what? Being stuck on one of the worst defensive teams in the NFL, while playing a 3-4 defense with 4-3 players?

For me and some others it was about the money in relation to his production. Incongruous. He was like our big FA signing last off season and I hardly noticed he was on the field.
