So, Andy Dalton signed a six-year, $115 million contract. That's $19.1 million a year. Andy Dalton! He, who has never won a playoff game.

Meanwhile, Russell Wilson has been hanging out with Jay-Z and Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven) in the off-season, making $662,434 a year.

I know its been discussed before after every other QB's big pay day, but its looking bleak that we get RW for under $20 million a year in a new contract next year. Just food for thought.

For perspective:

That contract is about as valuable as monopoly money. In terms of actual guarantees, it's a raise and a one-year extension. The team has outs after that. Basically, it's like Kaep's deal. Fitting for a mid-tier QB. Just like every other NFL contract, the fake numbers are put out there so agents can puff their chests.

Wilson will get paid but you're assuming Dalton hit's every single one of his escalators to reach your 19 million dollar a year average and 115 total value. Without escalators it's around 96 million total.

It's really 17 million guaranteed for the first two years with a 12 million dollar average. He basically exists on a year to year basis for years 3-6.

All true. Though in the case of both Kaep and Dalton, those teams have done very little in terms of QB competition, which makes me think Kaep and Dalton will likely see the end of those contracts. That is unless they just totally fall apart ala Matt Schaub.

SF and Cincy saw this contract coming, but still didn't invest in a QB to push their starter even with some monster values at QB appearing in recent drafts (Barkley, Smith, Nassib, Glennon, Garoppolo, Mallett trade opportunity, etc.) I think that's kind of interesting, if somewhat incompetent.

The Bengals will only cut Dalton if they find someone better, so while the guarantee isn't there, he'll have a lot of leverage regardless, especially if he DOES win a couple of playoff games in the next few years.
If the Bengals cut him after 2 years, all of a sudden there's a 28 year old QB with a winning record as a starter, an above average winning rate as a QB with multiple playoff appearances (and possibly wins) hitting the open market - and he'll get money from someone else.

I wish people would stop saying that contracts without guarantees are worthless - they're only worthless if you fall off.
As long as Dalton doesn't suffer a major injury or major regression he'll see most of the money in that contract - put it this way, if it was Wilson getting that contract we'd expect him to earn every penny of it.

If he starts winning playoff games they'll keep him and he would deserve to get paid.

And people assumed similar things about Mark Sanchez and Matt Schaub.

Tier 2 QBs do fall off. Therefore, long-term assurances do matter. If a team isn't sold on you (e.g. Kaep, Dalton), then the specifics of the contract will reflect that. This deal has no impact on Wilson. It sets a floor for Tier 2 QBs in the $16M/yr range with a third year team option. You won't sign Wilson, Luck or Newton with that kind of money/structure.
