Folks who think Seattle's defense isn't elite because they don't get sacks and turnovers are doomed to be surprised week after week. You don't lead the league in scoring defense by accident. Fact is, those KPIs don't fit the Seahawks model and I LOVE it. For a defense predicated on turnovers, what happens when you get bad luck in one playoff game. For a defense predicated on sacks, what happens when the offense schemes out of it for one game in the playoffs? Seattle's defense is NOT overly aggressive in the way people usually think about that word with defenses. They do hit hard, but they don't over commit, starting at a scheme level, with the dearth of blitzing. They're disciplined and don't give up big plays and, with the exception of Sherman sometimes, don't gamble. This is precisely why we're a good match-up for a Redskins team that likes to run a lot of misdirection.
Think about how amazing it is that Seattle doesn't get sacks, doesn't get turnovers, doesn't stop the run, and isn't good at getting stops on 3rd down! And, yet, leads the league in scoring defense, handily, despite one of the toughest schedules in the league this year. Because Seattle doesn't have some secret weapon, they have no secret weapon to game plan and scheme for. Oh, your team doesn't throw picks? Big deal. Pick up the pass rush? Who cares, we don't blitz anyway, try beating our all-world secondary with full coverage. Run it down our throats? Good luck outscoring our offense. Another 3rd down conversion? Hope you can make 6 of those in a row! Also, don't forget to outscore Seattle's offense!
Opposing offenses are kind of screwed. They have to hope for luck.
