Honestly though... do feel a bit bad for him. He might not be the good Samaritan that Russ is, but he's not a terrible guy. He was a couple plays away from big career wins over a couple years and now he will be starting over...
I still think he's smarmy douche, but he's not at the Greg Hardy - Dez Bryant level yet.
Not sure he is a "team player".

People are making this too personal and are obsessed with the "gotcha".

It was already 100% apparent that Kaep would not be on the team next year. It was also apparent that the Niners would like tolook at what they have so they can get a better idea of what kind of work needs to be done in the offseason. The Niners are saving some money by Kaep going on IR. The Niners are probably happy about this.

Kaep is an immature douche who doesn't "get it", but he played his way into the NFL and he has every reason to bet on himself and get himself ready for his next opportunity. Having surgery will give him time to rest and reflect on the choices he as made and the consequences of them. This is a good move for Kaep as well.

Both sides benefit from Kaep going on IR. Why the need to get worked up about it?

I don't see anyone getting worked up over it. This is a message board, and we are discussing the topic at hand.

Niners are gonna be on the hook for $17,000,000 next season with next to no return on investment.

Um, no.

49ers only on the hook if he can't play next season.

Wrong. Niners are on the hook if he can not pass the physical by April 1st. Then his 12mil salary will be guaranteed. But it might be bennificial to Kap to be healthy by March 9th so he can get in another team. The ball is in his court.

Get on a new team or bone the niners for 12mil. Hmmmm what to do.

This is kind of odd. No mention of injury and then suddenly he has a torn labrum? That is an injury that is not hard to fake and unless he is going to a team physician he could easily find a doctor to do surgery for pay and recognition.

We will see how this plays out but IMO he is aware he will not get near 12 mil on his next contract. It is very possible he is just playing the system to get his guaranteed money. It will be pretty obvious if he doesn't clear his physical before April.

I can't help but wonder if his agent is suggesting this. Him being released would cost the agent millions also and I don't think there is any love lost between Kaep and the organization.

Maybe this will be Karma for stealing 2 mil from Brown a couple years ago when he missed voluntary OTA's and the team elected to take his money rather than remind him of what was at stake.

Ya I was wondering about the agent also. It all seems very odd.

There are reports out that a couple teams contacted San Fran about trading for Kaepernick before the deadline but none of them could afford his salary this season. It appears the Niners will try again to trade him after the season is over.

His contract is big. Doubt he gets traded. Niners lose in this game. They will be forced to cut him IF IF IF he passes the physical.

Not that big for a starter, real big for a back up. Texans sound like a spot to land for that money, although if this is smoke and mirrors by the 49ers to manipulate things he could fail the physical they cut him another team picks him up and they get a comp pick maybe.

He'll be in *allas next year. They need to find Romo's backup and future replacement, and Jerruh loves the guy.

RW's new backup ... as T.J won't return next season.
I always thought Kap would be good in the read option -- he's got the mobility for it, if not the ability to see the open guys once he starts truckin'.

The niners look like they have a replacement for Kaep in this game, mobility and everything -- and can exploit our TE-vulnerable D.
