Hopefully for him its front loaded with garutees. I'd imagine it being his first start I'd heard of it should be decent. I know NE had a lot of interest last go around.

This is as much a leader signing IMO as anything else.

$17M for 4 years. No word on how much is guaranteed.

I am awaiting Brian McIntyre to post the real numbers on twitter. He has a really good technique for nailing these numbers. Loved it when he posted on the old board. He was taking off for awhile but I am not sure if he is still associated with the larger media distributions right now. He had given up his blog due to his increased obligations to the work he was doing across the league.

How much was left on the Seahawks deal?

You can cut a player and re-sign him in FA right?

Yep. If he was agreeable, they could have signed him as soon as he cleared waivers, though if he wanted to remain with a reduced salary, he would have just re-did his contract. I would guess if he had looked around and nothing was sounding enticing he could have come back if the team told him they would love to have him back with a certain number as a cap.

I would think it would have taken a month or so after free agency hit before he would have gotten to the point of considering coming back. Seahawks might have been talking $2-3M for less years, maybe even a 1 year deal?

Here is what his contract details were as of the end of 2013

The Seahawks signed Red Bryant to a five year $35 million contract on March 19, 2012. Bryant received a $5 million signing bonus and had his 2012 and 2013 base salaries fully guaranteed. Bryant will be eligible to receive a $3 million roster bonus in 2014. Bryant earned a $100,000 escalator to his 2013 base salary.

Bryant was released on February 28, 2014. He will count $3,000,000 against the Seahawks 2014 salary cap.

Here is what his numbers were after the contract as far as what was left

YearBase SalaryProrated BonusRoster BonusWorkout BonusOther BonusCap NumberDead MoneyCap Savings
2012$3,000,000$1,000,000$0$0$0$4,000,000$14,600,000($10,600,000)
2013$6,600,000$1,000,000$0$0$0$7,600,000$10,600,000($3,000,000)

He got $5M bonus, $3M (2012) + $6.6M (2013) == $14.6M paid out

So $35M - $14.6M == $20.4M (phantom money that would have been reality if he played the full 5 years under this contract).
